We at The Hill News would, first and foremost, like to welcome everyone back for another year at St. Lawrence. We also wish to extend an enthusiastic welcome to the Class of 2023 – we are very excited to have you join the Laurentian community. As this semester kicks into gear, we want to talk about our role on campus, and what we hope to do for all of you.
The Hill News is St. Lawrence’s student-run newspaper – the operative term there being student-run. All of our staff members, from our editors and digital staff to our writers, are students just like the rest of you. We sit in class with you, we eat at Dana and the Pub when you do, and we go out to many of the same places you do.
Being that we are on campus with you all, we also hear what other students say about The Hill News itself. While we appreciate the praise and kind words many of you offer, we are also aware of the criticisms that exist. Students have expressed, both directly and indirectly, some dissatisfaction with the content we provide on a weekly basis.
To this, we can only respond by saying we hear you, but we are only as good as our writers. If you feel dissatisfied with the articles we publish, we strongly encourage you to reach out and write for us. Our goal is to be student-run both at the managerial level and the written level. If you feel we are not covering an issue appropriately, or that you have a perspective we are missing, we want to work with you to bring your voice to the wider audience of The Hill News. We aim for this paper to serve the community, but the only way that can happen is if the community is involved.
THN prides itself on providing the opportunity to highlight the voices and experiences of our peers by cultivating a platform for all to speak up about what they think is important. We want your words, thoughts, and ideas to reach not only the population of SLU, but alumni and the greater St. Lawrence community alike. We aim to start dialogues across different cultures and identities on campus.
We truly want to hear from you. If you read something in THN that you don’t agree with or just have an opinion on, we want to hear it. We want to know what we can do better, but we can only do that if we hear from our campus.
