Hello dear reader, thank you ever so much for stumbling upon our humble little column. You may be looking at our title and thinking to yourself, ‘hey, yeah, wtf is a dub? Is that an acronym? A niche subset of reggae music? A theme house?’ Well, lucky reader, I happen to have the answers for ya!
So, what is “Dub?”
To begin, “Dub” is not an acronym, but it is an abbreviation of one. We are the Women’s Resource Center, aka the WRC, aka The Dub (we like that last one the best).
So now you’re probably thinking “okay you’re the Dub, but what’s your deal??”
Well hold on to your hats because I’m about to give you the lowdown!
We are eleven flirty, fabulous, feminist folks living in the quaint blue theme house located at 3 University Avenue. You know the one radiating good vibes and adorned with a glorious porch swing, glitter permanently ingrained in the sidewalk outside? Yeah, that one.
We aim to advocate for intersectional feminism across campus and within the SLU community through communication, collaboration, and condoms (more on that later). We host weekly discussions about different feminist topics, from sex ed to white privilege to consent to gun violence to body positivity to kinks to benevolent sexism to the 2020 presidential race to religion to mental health and beyond! Phew!
In addition to our fun lil conversation hours (did we mention we bring snacks?) we also provide a number of resources to our beloved Laurentian community. First of all, we always have free (yes free) Trojan condoms in our entryway for you to take in times of ~need~. We also provide $20 gift cards to Walgreens for students looking to buy Plan B, as well as transportation and support during that process if needed! Last but not least, many of our house members are trained advocates, and are always available to help students in times of crisis. All of this to say, we aim to be a safe space for ALL students and community members.
However, we are only as good as we allow ourselves to be. Unfortunately, we have had a legacy of sometimes not being as inclusive as we could be. Feminism is a huge, complicated, and often tricky subject to navigate and advocate for in this rapidly changing world, but we want to make it work for everyone who needs it, and we need your help. If you need us to do better, tell us to do better. Tell us where we can put in work, where we can grow, how we can help you. Talk to us, DM us on Instagram (@sludub), stop by our house, send us a carrier pigeon with your message for us. Ask us a question, write us a letter, and we will answer, pinky promise.
