Weekend of Winning for Saints Athletics
St. Lawrence athletics is coming off a weekend of winners, in which teams and individuals had great performances and notched key victories. The long weekend started on Feb. 27, when the 12th-ranked St. Lawrence Saints Men’s Lacrosse team beat the 15th-ranked St. John Fisher Cardinals by a score of 11-9. Daniel Mahoney ’27 was the star for the Saints, scoring a career-high five goals in the win. This victory moved the Saints to 2-0 on the season.
Moving to Friday and Saturday, the Saints succeeded on the track and the ice. The Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams traveled down to Ithaca, New York, for the 2025 Liberty League Indoor Championships. Nick Lyndaker ’26 put on a show in the mile. He currently has the third fastest mile time in Division III with a 4:03.36 from earlier this indoor season. Lyndaker sat in the pack until the race started heating up at the 1k mark. He turned on the jets to take the lead and was not caught, getting the win in 4:14.01. This was Lyndaker’s second straight win in the Liberty League Indoor Mile, as last year he won this event at home in Newell Fieldhouse.
On the women’s side, first-year phenom Avery Blanchard won the 5k for the Saints, leading from about the halfway point until the end of the race and getting the win in a time of 18:23.58. It was an impressive performance from Blanchard, who turned on the jets to separate from the field in the final laps, with her winning margin being seven seconds.
On day two of leagues, Lyndaker won his second event of the meet, completing the Liberty League double with his 3k victory. In this one, Lyndaker didn’t take the lead until the last lap, when he turned on the jets to get the victory in a time of 8:20.83. He was named the “Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet” for his performances, an impressive honor.
The Saints Women’s Ice Hockey team also were a part of the winning ways of the weekend, sweeping the Yale Bulldogs two games to zero to advance to the Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinals. In game one, the Saints went into overtime, knotted up at two goals apiece. In overtime, Claire Tyo M’26 netted the winner for the Saints to take the 1-0 series lead. Game two was also close, but two goals from Abby Hustler ’25 and one each from Kennedy Wilson ’26 and Kristina Bahl M’26 ensured this wouldn’t go to overtime. The Saints won 4-3 to advance to the ECAC semifinals. This Friday, they will play Colgate University in the semifinals at Lynah Rink at Cornell University.
Lastly, the long weekend of winning finished on Tuesday, as the St. Lawrence Women’s Lacrosse team got a 13-10 win over SUNY Canton for their first victory. In this matchup, the Saints went up 12-2, but SUNY Canton returned in the fourth quarter to make it a close game. The Saints held them off after SUNY Canton scored eight straight goals to start the fourth, adding a 13th goal and only giving up one more goal to earn an exciting 13-10 win.
