Men’s Lacrosse Takes Nazareth, 16-8

On Saturday, March 31, the No. 17 Saints took on Nazareth, beating them with a final score of 16-8. The Saints advanced to 6-2, while Naz fell to 2-8.

Five early goals were scored by five Saints players before any answer from the Nazareth offense. Liam Doherty ’20 had 10 faceoff wins at center. Starting goalie Alex Terry ’20 had 10 saves for the Saints.

Captain Jordan Dow ’18 led with two goals and three assists. Conor Caffrey ’19 was also a large contributor, with two goals and one assist, while Alex Dunn ’19 and Steven Peterson ’18 also netted two goals each. Nazareth outshot the Saints 33 to 28, but the Saints capitalized on their opportunities to take the lead and hold on to win.

Attackman Mike Donnelly ’20 also netted one goal and had one assist. He has become a strong contributor on the field for the Saints. Donnelly said after the game, “Our strength was definitely that we had many different people scoring. Headed into our next game, our focus will be on continuing with our momentum and having multiple people contribute offensively.”

In the Saints Athletics recap of the game, head coach Mike Mahoney was quoted as saying, “I thought today was a great response by the guys. We wanted to get off to a good start, and I think we accomplished that. We had a great balance in the scoring column and shot the ball really well, which has been a focus of ours.”

While the class of 2017 graduated 18 seniors, the Saints held a strong group of returning starters, including Dow and Cal Hynson ’18. The team also gained the addition of seventeen new incoming players, including 14 first-years and 3 transfer student-athletes.

The Saint’s record thus far in the season is 6-2, recording their only two losses of the season to Middlebury College and No. 19 Ithaca College.
