Now that the birds are chirping again (I swear I heard them), it feels like it’s time for St. Lawrence University students to start sunbathing on the quad, going for dips in the river, and frat boys walking around in flip-flops. Sadly, it isn’t quite time for that yet because Canton is expecting snow next week. But luckily for us, spring break is just around the corner!
Personally, spring break for me means going home, snuggling up with my dogs, and catching up on all the doctor’s appointments I’ve missed. I know, riveting! As much fun as traveling to a warmer climate would be, sometimes, I just need to be home to lay in my own bed and spend time with my family. Plus, I will have access to a real kitchen and a home-cooked meal. This is the real treat because, let’s be honest, I am sick of all dining options at this point in the semester. But let’s get into the fun stuff!
Matt Serrano ’26 and Kyle Freundlich ’27 are leading an Outing Club trip to Utah. With six other students, they will be road-tripping to all five national parks in Utah and camping on public land along the way. “I’m super excited. I’ve been out west before, but I’ve never been to a desert,” said Serrano. After flying out of Ottawa, the group will start their trip in Las Vegas. The scenic drives and hikes will be hard to beat! “It’s a completely new environment that I’ve never experienced before,” said Serrano.
Now, for the classic spring break trip. For Quinn Sirgany ’27, spring break calls for a beach trip with her friends. Sirgany and a few other girls on the cross-country team will spend the week at an Airbnb in Miami. “I’m excited to have warm weather and be on the beach,” said Sirgany.
The Habitat for Humanity theme house is leading a trip to Taos, New Mexico. During the week, they will be volunteering with the Taos Habitat for Humanity chapter to help with the finishing stages of one of their newest houses. The houses in Taos are typically made out of adobe, which would be a new material to work with for most of the people going. They will also volunteer with the local ReStore, a non-profit home improvement store that helps fund builds. “We are very excited to learn new skills using different materials and learn from the people of Habitat for Humanity Taos,” said Sabria Roggendorf ’25.
The sophomore seminar, “Racial Segregation in the 21st Century,” is taking a trip to Washington, D.C. The class focuses on race, segregation and diversity in the 21st century. The five-day trip will feature educational outings, including the African American History Museum, The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, The Washington Center, and Ford’s Theater. Carson Hanna ’27, a student in the class, is excited to go. “I think it’s going to be a good educational experience,” said Hanna. He mentioned that the trip is new since this is the first time the class has been offered. “Hopefully, it will be offered again,” said Hanna
Overall, SLU students seem to have great plans for their spring break! But let’s remember, it doesn’t matter what you do over spring break as long as you relax and take that much-needed break from the spring semester slump.
