Student Q: I spend a lot of time worrying about not finding a well-paying job? What can I do to alleviate this stress?
It depends on what you mean by well-paying. I was a teacher and we all know that’s not the best paying job, but it made me way happier than being an engineer or actuary (something else I could have done with my emphasis in math). I was always able to pay my bills and have a little left over to do fun things. You won’t start off making beaucoup $$, but you’ll work your way up. Save some money every month, no matter how small. You never know when you’ll need new tires and those are expensive 🙂

Everyone wants to find a job that they love that pays them well, but many people aren’t willing to climb the ladder to get there. You, most likely, won’t get a super high paying job for your first job or two out of college, but if a low-paying job will give the experience you need or opportunity to move into the position you actually want, it is worth taking a little less pay or a job you don’t love for a year or two. It is also worth finding ways to cut living costs by living with roommates or moving to more affordable cities. You might also consider taking a job that is in your field that will allow you to make the connections you need, even if you have to take a second, part-time job to make ends meet. Just keep in mind that shouldn’t be permanent. You should see that as a possibility for 1-3 years, before you move into a position that allows you to make a living off a single job. You should be able to gain experience or knowledge in every position to move you toward your overall goal; that knowledge and experience can be as valuable as monetary compensation.

A well-paying job is important, but more important is to find a job that you love and that you look forward to doing every day. I was able to secure a position the week after finishing business school and have remained at the same college with ever-increasing responsibilities and title changes.

Don’t worry about it. If you’re industrious and inventive you will eventually find what you’re looking for. Your first job doesn’t have to be your dream job. Sometimes you find something you’re passionate about when you happen to be travelling on a different path.

Regardless of what worries you, stress is stress. Do not let it overcome you. Find a venue, exercise, a time management workshop, reading, watching TV. Your brain needs to rest, your success depends on it.
