Saints Lacrosse Begins 2021 Season Strong

This past Saturday, the Women’s and Men’s Lacrosse teams took to Hall/Leet Stadium at North Country Field for their first games back since the pandemic ended the 2020 season. Being able to get back onto the turf for practices due to the unusually warm Canton April weather has been instrumental in the teams having been getting more comfortable playing with each other.

In the first game of the day, the men took on St. John Fischer, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll 12th ranked program out of Rochester, NY. While St. Lawrence is not ranked too far behind at 16, the men knew that this game would be great competition.

Head Coach Mike Mahoney prepped his team for this with the knowledge that St. John Fischer had already had four games before they faced the Saints. His prep-work was successful and the Saints came out taking a 6-1 lead early in the second quarter.

While the Cardinals were able to put a couple in the back of the net quickly, St. Lawrence, led by attackman Mark Mahoney and Judge Murphy, was able to hold St. John Fischer off to a final score of 14-10. Acknowledging the eagerness to begin the season, Coach Mahoney explained, “As I told the team after the game, the energy out there felt like the culmination of every holiday and birthday over the past year that hasn’t been quite the same.”

Feeling the excitement of beginning the 2021 season, the women took on Castleton University out of Vermont. Scoring 13 goals in the first half and 9 goals in the second, the Saints’ momentum was extremely consistent throughout the whole game. St. Lawrence put up a 38-2 advantage in shots on goal and won draw controls 18-6.

Led in scoring by sophomore Charlotte Powell who notched 5 goals for St. Lawrence, nine other players scored. “And I am very proud that everyone contributed to our success today. Each member of the team stuck to their role and the game plan”, Coach Hannah Corkery said after the game.

First-year goalie, Courtney Lynn secured her first collegiate win against Castleton and many other players new to the program were able to get more comfortable on the field as well as building strong player-to-player connections. With the Saints 2020 season being cut so short, the women are hoping to successfully carry this momentum.

This weekend, the women will play fellow Liberty League program Union College, in a back-to-back series, Friday’s game is at Union, and Saturdays will be home at 2 pm. A reminder to students that spectators are not permitted inside Hall/Leet Stadium. The men will take on Liberty League opponent Vassar College in Poughkeepsie at 4 pm and a live-stream will be available on the Saints Athletics page.
