Athlete of the Week: Julia Dellarusso
When did you start playing field hockey?
I started playing Field Hockey in 3rd grade and I immediately fell in love with the sport.
Why St. Lawrence to continue your athletic career?
I chose St. Lawrence to continue playing Field Hockey because of first of all the different opportunities I could take a part in while still playing Field Hockey. Such as going abroad, being a part of Greek life, and various other campus clubs. I am lucky to have a coach that is so supportive in making sure I can be the best that I can be. Second, the alumni network is one of the strongest networks in the country. I knew I could be successful going to SLU and take that into the workforce with help from Alumni. Lastly, the academics. I wanted a school with strong academics yet that could make me thrive in the classroom.
What is your favorite field hockey moment from SLU?
My favorite Field Hockey Moment was beating Skidmore in 2018. That was the first time we had beaten Skidmore in about 8 or 9 years. I will never forget watching the clock count down to zero and running onto the field with my teammates. That made me so proud to be a member of such an amazing team.
What’s one thing you would tell others about playing a collegiate sport?
Being a part of a team is a great source of a community. From the end of August to the end of October we are together 6 out of 7 days a week. They are a great support system from going to the library together to eating meals together it has been an experience I know I will take with me for the rest of my life.
What’s been your favorite part about St. Lawrence?
The friendships. The people I have met in the last four years I know will be with me for the rest of my life. I am so thankful to have met my best friends here; I wouldn’t want to have spent the cold and snowy winters with anyone else. These memories I know will stay with me forever. When people tell me there is something special about the community at SLU, I definitely know what they are talking about now.
