Quarantine Testimony #1: Warmth
Written by Kiki Melvin ’86, P’23
As an alum, a parent as well as a moderator of the Facebook Parents’ Group, I want to give shout outs to all the Administrative Staff that has been working so hard to deal with this pandemic and all the NY State mandates that make their jobs so much more difficult this year. I’ve been very impressed with the level of communication from emails to Webinars to posts on the apps. I’m also thankful for the quick responses I had to any emails I personally sent asking questions. I can only imagine the shear number of questions that must have been directed at the Administrative Staff over the last 11 months. Never once did I feel like they weren’t doing their best or that they didn’t truly care for my child.
One example that is probably my favorite story, is when the first two dorms went into quarantine last semester after wastewater testing showed traces of the virus. Our Facebook Parent group immediately sprung into action and raised money within our group and from other SLU Alumni Facebook groups to buy Sergi’s pizza rolls for the students in those two dorms. With the help of Marijo Haggett in Dining Services and Hagi Bradley we were able to give those students a little quarantine treat and felt so good to know that so many people cared and were so generous with their donations. It really gave me a warm feeling to know that SLU still comes together as a family and a community in order to help one another.
