Week 4 Recap: A mix of Victories and Losses

This weekend had a mix of both dominant victories and close losses for the fall athletic teams that had competitions.  

Starting with the victories, both men and women’s cross country placed first at the Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational. According to the Saints Athletics press release, first-year Timothy Boyce won his second career cross country race to lead the Saints to victory. Sophomore Alli Sibold won her debut six-kilometer race for the Saints.  

Junior Captain Jackson Hamilton said it was a solid day for the men.  

“It was our first full distance race of the season and the first official eight-kilometer for sixteen out of twenty of the guys who raced Saturday, and they handled it well,” he said. “We were super excited to win the meet and defend our home turf, and it set the tone for the rest of our season going forward.” 

Football dominated over Caselton with a 55 to 3 win. Senior Quarterback Tyler Grochot took over first place for career pass attempts and career passing yards in the Saints record book. 

Men’s Soccer was victorious for their Liberty League matchup of the season against Union at Sandy Macallister Field. Junior Marvin Sibanda had two goals for the saints and senior Raphael Zoccolaro scored the game-winning goal with about five minutes left.  

Junior Captain Miles Levy said it was a typical liberty league battle.  

“Being the first liberty league game since a disappointing end to the 2019 season, we went out with a chip on our shoulder,” he said. “This energy helped us go up early with two great goals from Marvin.” 

He said tensions were high after Union scored two goals to tie the game.  

“Fortunately, Rapha couldn’t have picked a better time to score his first career goal, the eventual game winner,” said Levy. “Overall, a key three points on our quest to bring the liberty league title back home!” 

They faced Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday at home. Senior Drew Terhune said he was optimistic heading into the game.  

“This is a huge opportunity to get three points and sit at the top of the Liberty League table,” Terhune said on Tuesday night before the game. “We started off with a good win against Union and are looking to continue that for the rest of the Liberty League season.”   

Women’s Soccer had a victory over Union College on Saturday at Union to open their Liberty League play for the year. Junior Tyler Potter and Sophomore Emma Reynolds scored goals for the Saints. At their game against Middlebury on Sunday, the Saints lost 0-2 to the Panthers.  

Volleyball had two tough losses this weekend for their Liberty League openers. They lost on the road at Ithaca in four sets, and at home on Saturday against RIT. They are looking to redeem themselves at Clarkson this weekend.  

Field Hockey also lost this weekend to Skidmore college at home.  

Women’s Tennis had a successful weekend at the SLU Invitational. According to the press release, the women combined for 21-3 victories over SUNY Geneseo and RIT. Emily Harris went 5-0 on the day and 3-0 in double matches.  

Men’s Golf placed second at Paul Smith’s College this weekend. Cooper Evans ‘24 places second overall and Chris Ogden tied for sixth place.
