What Does the Future Hold for Carson Wentz?
It seemed as though the then lead MVP candidate of the 2017 season was never going to be a question mark for the Eagles in the future. After many injuries, inconsistent play, the draft pick of Jalen Hurts, the firing of Head Coach Doug Pederson, and a major-league contract, Wentz’s situation in Philly is certainly fascinating for all football fans to dissect. All of these factors combined with the fact that rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts played very well for the Eagles this season makes it an even more intriguingly complex scenario. Let’s look at what possibilities could unfold for Wentz inside or outside of Philadelphia as the Eagles fanbase and staff debates this dilemma.
The most unexciting situation would be that new Head Coach Nick Sirianni believes in the former MVP type level quarterback and unquestionably lets him start to begin the season with little to no changes organizationally. It’s possible that former Head Coach Doug Pederson had an adverse effect on Wentz in his most recent years and that the organization believes in a fresh slate for him with a new staff. More realistically, the Eagles could have a full out QB competition in camp and let the best man win the job while keeping both on the roster. Lastly, if the Eagles believe that Hurts played well enough this year and is their franchise guy, then there are a whole host of possibilities that will be presented to Wentz outside of the organization. The Eagles need help across their roster so shipping Wentz for more future assets and or current players could greatly benefit the team. Despite his current four-year $128 million cap hit, many teams across the NFL would be open to adopting his contract (or some of it) for his upside and ability to better their team.
Some teams that make a lot of sense for a Wentz trade include Indianapolis, Chicago, New England, and possibly even the New York Jets or Giants. If any of these teams could establish their quarterback situation more significantly with Wentz under the helm then they can do damage, assuming they get a formidable Carson. It seems as though now Wentz is unhappy with how things have played out and continue to develop in Philadelphia, so it would not be surprising to see a QB-needy team pull the trigger especially considering the Stafford-Goff deal a few weeks ago. His value, depending on how much cap another team would inherit, would be quite high, possibly including at least a first or second round pick and noble players. In my opinion, this is the storyline of the offseason and considering a major QB swap has been executed already this offseason, who’s to say it doesn’t happen again?
