The 2021 NFL season has been electric so far with many intriguing storylines and action-packed games despite Covid-19 concerns. Going into this season, many football fans across the country wondered what policies the NFL will be implementing for the Covid-19 vaccine. Both players and fans, whether or not the vaccine is required can influence how the season plays out. Currently, there is no vaccine mandate for players although there is a 93% vaccination rate among active players. This high vaccination rate shows that players prioritized preventing outbreaks among their teams and the entire NFL, which is impressive.
Despite the high vaccination rate and no mandate on vaccines, weekly tests are being performed for NFL players to prevent an outbreak in those who are unvaccinated. Vaccinated players who test positive must complete two negative tests within a one-day period to return to play. Unvaccinated players who test positive must isolate for ten days and test negative after to return to play. There are strict policies if an outbreak does hit an NFL team, including a forfeit of the game as well as no game check. These policies are in place to make sure that players get vaccinated and those that don’t understand their role in preventing adverse effects for their team.
For NFL fans, vaccines are required depending on location. For example, Buffalo Bills fans are required to have at least one shot of the Covid-19 vaccine with proof to attend games. Fans of the Las Vegas Raiders need proof of vaccination, but are not required to wear masks during the game. The Seattle Seahawks requires fans to have a negative test result within 72 hours of gameday in order to cheer during home games. For most NFL teams, a vaccine or negative test result is not required to attend games despite gatherings of thousands of people in close proximity.
So far, through four weeks of play this year, there has not been any major outbreaks among teams which should be a good sign for the rest of the season. It is also critical that no NFL players have an adverse reaction to the vaccine during their careers as there have been concerns regarding that issue. It’s good to see the NFL address Covid-19 more firmly this season, so that there is limited confusion and we can fully enjoy the NFL’s great action.
