A Look Back At Peak Weekend 2023

0

You may have heard the chatter in Dana Dining Hall or could tell by the changing of the leaves. It’s that time of year again when the campus comes together to take on the same challenge it has attempted for 41 years. This past weekend, St. Lawrence University students attempted to summit all 46 Adirondack High Peaks. Over the course of three days and 20 trips, 106 St. Lawrence students climbed a total of 85,649 feet in elevation and a combined 300.8 miles.

According to the New York Times, in 1982, the Outing Club President Jeff Huther ’82 devised the plan to conquer all 46 High Peaks and hoped it would become a St. Lawrence Outing Club tradition. Now, 41 years later, it’s still going strong. Those who have experienced Peak Weekend understand why it’s a tradition that lives on. Each peak has a character of its own, all with its own unique natural features.

Silas Timm ’27, a participant who hiked the Dix Range on Saturday, said, “It was a great opportunity to do something that I wouldn’t have done otherwise, as well as time spent bonding with and getting to know other SLU students.” Not only does Peak Weekend encourage students to get out into the Adirondacks, but it also creates a connection between trip-goers and a sense of community amongst all those who helped meet the goal of 46 High Peaks.
