SLU Addresses Intimate Violence with Purple Week
St. Lawrence University is “Taking Back the Night” in honor of the Advocates Purple Week throughout the first week of November.
A series of events, talks and empowerment activities were set up to bring awareness to intimate partner violence and present a healthy atmosphere for individuals to discuss what happens and what we as a community can do to address it. All of the proceeds that are made through purchases and donations during Purple Week go to the Renewal House of St Lawrence County. This safe haven’s goal is to respond and act upon the needs of victims of sexual and domestic violence, and create a discourse of positive change in the community.
The week kicked off on a warm, North Country fall day this past Sunday with a “Purple Color Run.” Students, staff and alumni took part in a 5K to show support for those who have been victims of sexual assault and to raise funds for the Renewal House on campus. A few of St. Lawrence’s collegiate teams rounded up a few team members, sped off from the Liberty Bell that Sunday morning and ran through the purple clouds of dry paint. What started out as white shirts with a small purple themed logo, finished with splashes of color, making the long run exciting with every step.
On Wednesday, multiple student groups rallied behind an “Empowerment Yoga” session complete with a yoga class, art raffle and snacks. SLU PPGA, Advocates, SLU Club Yoga, the DUB, Carefree Black Girls, Greek Life and The Coalition invited all to meditate on the power of unity and support those affected by sexual assault.
Other fitness and health related events happening this week included an empowerment spin class hosted by SLU Health and Fitness and a nature hike led by campus security. The OC hosted a “Purple Picnic” at the picturesque Lampson Falls Monday afternoon, which also provided a way to get off campus and enjoy the final few days of fall in Canton, N.Y. before the winter months settle in at long last.
Self care should always be of utmost importance, but often times college students forget the benefits of checking out and taking a minute out of your daily routine of work, eat and sleep. That is why self care is emphasized during this week. The various activities are inspired by the ways in which negativity can be expelled and replaced through a welcoming sense of community and friendship.
Monday, Thursday, and Friday, students were offered a “Self Care” room. Students were able to detach from the stresses of life and schoolwork, and take a moment to appreciate all that they are capable of doing and becoming, and simply relax.
Another mode of self care took place in the form of an Open Mic Poetry Night at Java Wednesday evening. There, students brought forth their vulnerabilities and vocalized their beautiful poetry for the campus to experience.
The “Speak Out” with Professor Jen Thomas is to be held in Gulick Theatre Nov. 10. A Purple Week Themed Gospel Service will be held in the Chapel on Nov. 11.
The Barista will hold an evening of coffee, tea and painting tonight at 7 p.m. Thursday night, a spa night helped students unwind from stress as the semester begins to climax toward finals.
The purpose of Purple Week is that the St. Lawrence community takes part in ending sexual violence not only on campus, but also at-large throughout everyday actions and decisions. So in the spirit of taking back the night, break the silence, end the violence and get connected with those around you.
