Anna Soderberg, News Editor:
“I have loved my time with THN. I am so lucky to have found a corner on the 3rd Floor of the Student Center that gave me great laughs, silly stress and new friends all at once. Thank you to Kate, Marrissa & James for letting me run late and write about fashion trends till 11pm. And, thank you Margaret for being you, I’m so glad we got to edit together. Four years later and I’m still so happy I signed up at the First-Year club fair. Thanks for having me. <3”
Greyson Wall, Sports Editor:
“Working for The Hill News has been a great experience and one I will look back on very fondly. I always enjoyed writing articles and gained a lot of experience from interviewing a variety of different people inside and out of St. Lawrence University. I had never imagined being the Sports Editor, but I am really glad I chose to pursue it. Having always loved sports and being a passionate Boston sports fan, I felt right at home there. It was a pleasure to be able to have so many great athletes featured in our “Athlete of the Week” section from record breakers to players from overseas. There are so many talented athletes at St. Lawrence so it is great to have them featured and get an account of their sports routines, daily lives or reactions to an eventful game or play. My favorite part of The Hill News is the tradition that keeps on going each year. In the newsroom, on top of some dusty metal closets, there are old editions of The Hill News stemming back to the 1950s that are full of years of alumni’s contributions to the paper. It is really cool to see those and know that you are continuing the tradition of a student run newspaper here at St. Lawrence University. The campus of St. Lawrence is a second home to everyone who goes through here, so contributing to the newspaper that represents it was an honor.”
Maggie Gehrke, Photography Editor:
“Although there is an arson tally on the office whiteboard dedicated solely to me, I’ll miss THN and all the people who made it what it was. I signed up to take photos for the Hill News my freshman year, and it’s been nothing if not an adventure since then. I’ll miss Wednesday nights in the office, photoshopping squirrel-frog hybrids, Liza Minnelli impressions, and the continuous playlist tampering. Thank you Kate, Marrissa, and James for keeping everything together and running, my time at THN would not have been what it was without all of you. Thank you Juraj, for your continuous enthusiasm and passion, and for keeping me on my toes always. And, special thank you to Hannah, who is the reason I kept my sanity all those Wednesday nights. I’m grateful to have had and shared this experience with so many wonderful people, thank you all so much.”
James Lehner, Managing Editor:
“When I started working with the THN digital team during my freshman year, I had no clue how much it would become a part of my life at St. Lawrence. There are so many great memories from the years, but the thing that will stick with me the most is getting to talk to students and faculty about the paper. Whether it was about a story they found really interesting, or something they wanted to write for another issue, or just asking whether the paper would be out on Friday morning, it felt like the work we were all doing was reaching people. Knowing that at least a few people on campus genuinely looked forward to grabbing a copy on Friday mornings helped make every hour spent writing, editing, and working in the office well past midnight completely worth it. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity, and to have shared this experience with so many amazing people in the office, as well as all of you, our readers.”
Marrissa Allen, Editor-In-Chief:
“When I signed up to write for the Hill News at my very first club fair, I didn’t think anything would come of it. I thought I would just write for the newspaper for the next four years and that would be it. I never thought I would end up in the Hill News office doing layout every Wednesday for my last two years of college. But it’s been incredible. I’ve learned so much and met so many people that am proud to call my friends. Thank you to Hannah, Margaret, Anna, Greyson, Maggie, Chris, Delaney, Thao, and Mike for putting together an amazing newspaper and website this past year and for your continued dedication this semester even though we can’t all be together. I miss you all so much. And thank you to Juraj for encouraging and guiding us throughout this process, and for all the pizza. And, lastly, thank you to Kate and James for making me laugh and keeping me sane at 2 am, and sitting through the countless YouTube videos I forced you to watch. (Will a Fosse neck do it?) I wouldn’t have wanted to spend every Wednesday (and Thursday morning!) with anyone else. I can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things you both will do. Love you guys. ❤”
Kate Angus, Editor-In-Chief:
“I never thought I would get so emotional over a newspaper, but here we are. When I was a freshman, I accidentally glanced in the direction of THN’s table at the club fair, to which the editors screamed at me to come over. The noob I was, I couldn’t say no, and was intimidated into signing up for their emails. It was the best non-choice I could have made. Four years, many pizzas at Juraj’s, 4 editorial positions, a handful of mini-crises, and countless late nights later, The Hill News has come to define a large part of my college experience. I want to thank Margaret, Anna, Chris, Laney, Hannah, Greyson, Maggie, Mike, Thao, and of course Juraj for a great, albeit chaotic year, and for rising to the occasion and producing some of our best work in the face of a global crisis and remote learning. And of course, a special thank you Marrissa and James for the many late nights, SNL bits, and weird Spotify rabbits holes at 2 in the morning. I also will never get over how we shaved four whole hours off our layout time. Four! Count ‘em! Wednesday nights just won’t be the same without the sleep deprivation or you guys. To anyone still reading these sappy paragraphs, thank you for your support and contributions to The Hill News. I say it all the time, but THN is a community paper, for students, by students, and it is nothing if not for the support of the student body.”
