A Misguided Attempt at a Good Policy

The recent college debt relief acted upon by the Biden Administration is the correct move, giving relief to thousands of Americans swallowed in debt, although more could be done.  

The administration decided to give relief to millions in need, but it does not truly address the bigger overall issue of colleges overcharging and collecting thousands of dollars per student. If the issue were to truly be addressed, the Biden Administration needs to focus on the college system. An attempt to mitigate the money system the colleges have become would be a much more effective solution, rather than simply giving relief to one college generation, which will be replaced by the next generation.   

The issues which plague the system can be best noted by Brookings, which posted the article The for-profit college system is broken, and the Biden administration needs to fix it. The work went into depth of the system control the private college system holds over many, and the US itself. A series of pointed out facts which the Biden Administration could adhere to in order to force lower tuition yet increase education output. Such as finding a way to force for-profit colleges to focus on education, specifically good education production as the article notes.  

The US public also is in a tough spot regarding college relief, which is that millions of Americans suffer from debt in some fashion. Credit card, mortgage, car payments, and other forms of debt are high among the American public currently. A public which in general did not attend college yet are finding themselves almost screwed over in a sense. Thousands of currently work-class Americans make a choice not to attend college, which for the Biden administration to give no focus could be dangerous in the midterm elections. None the less, what my overall point reflects is that the US has many issues currently of socio-economic factors that need to be addressed in a large-scale factor. Whether it is the college system or working-class Americans, the system overall needs leadership and focus.  

While it is progress in the grand scheme of things, it is simply a Band-Aid over a large wound that needs more than just that. The issue is one of magnitude, which needs to be addressed in magnitude. Proper solutions, proper judgement, and real action are needed to fix the current college debt crisis.
