Athlete of the Week: Kelsea Whittier, 2024, Canton NY, WGolf

When did you start golfing? 

I started golfing as a freshman in high school, but it was more of a social outing than a competition. It took me until my senior year of high school to buckle down and take it more seriously.  Then I began to play with intentions to improve my game.

Why did you choose to attend St. Lawrence? 

I choose SLU because of the infectious attitude on campus. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful, and I knew from a young age that it was a community I wanted to be a part of.

How has the team been practicing with COVID restrictions?  

We were able to practice fairly normally outdoors this fall. Currently, we are practicing in our training center a few times a week. The men’s and women’s teams have split up into smaller groups throughout the week, so we don’t exceed capacity inside the training center.

What’s one thing you’ve enjoyed about playing a collegiate sport? 

I’ve enjoyed building relationships with teammates and coaches thus far. My teammates have been another circle of friends from across campus that I can rely on for a smile and laugh at practice.

What’s been your favorite part about St. Lawrence so far? 

My favorite part of SLU is the people. Everyone is fun and welcoming. I laugh more than ever, and golf is no exception. Playing for Coach Mary has been a highlight of these difficult semesters as we navigate a global pandemic and try to maintain a healthy college student life.
