CA Wellness Paint and Sip Event

0

The spring semester is in full swing and there are plenty of opportunities for students to enjoy their time at St. Lawrence University. While the weather may be frigid outside, plenty of student groups are hosting events indoors aimed at keeping students warm, while also allowing them to be with their fellow Laurentians. One such opportunity was the Community Assistant (CA) Wellness Council’s “Paint and Sip” event.

On Friday, Mar. 3, the CA Wellness Council hosted the “Paint and Sip” event in the Winston Room, which was described as a chance to “relax and paint” on advertising sent out by the council. The event was aiming to give students a chance to relax and de-stress by doing a mindfulness activity—in this case, painting.

Participants were given a canvas with a cup upon arrival and were prompted to choose a pallet with paint colors of their choice. They were then given the chance to choose a beverage to drink or “sip” while they were painting their canvas. The event drew a crowd of 40 students, and a lot of people left feeling very relaxed and that the event had done its job.

Students thought that an event like this acted as an alternative to SLU’s popular party/drinking culture. The event was centered on a form of drinking that did not involve alcoholic beverages.

One student who vocalized this sentiment was Community Assistant Taylor Scheening ’23 who said, “It was a neat way to enjoy time with friends without having to leave campus. I love painting and it was another way to drink, but responsibly.”

Scheening emphasized that this was a more responsible form of “drinking” that still allowed her to be with individuals that she enjoys. Scheening also commented on the quality of art that was being produced, adding that “We had a great time and made some memorable pieces.”

Other Students were happy to be inside the student center and not outdoors on this cold Friday afternoon. Nicholas Stolfi ’24 proclaimed that “It was great to see people having a good time indoors while the weather outside hovered around zero degrees, it was radical.” Students overall viewed the event as a warm, indoor alternative to more typical SLU activities.

The CA Wellness Council falls under the Residence Life umbrella and Residential Coordinator Sean Collins, who oversees the council, was also in attendance. Collins stated that “It was really exciting to see so many folks express their creativity and de-stress at the event.”

He also expressed that students should keep their eyes open for more events as the semester goes on, adding, “I hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as our CA team did and I look forward to seeing more folks at the other CA Council’s events later this semester!”

The CA Wellness council event was viewed as a success by many attendees, CAs, and members of Residence Life professional staff. Students interested in attending future events hosted by Res-Life should keep their eyes on their community bulletin boards. Res-Life hopes to see more students take advantage of future events.
