SLU Mens Hockey Sweeps Two Game Series Vs. Clarkson
In Friday night’s game, at a packed Appleton Arena with a crowd of 2,524 people, Clarkson got on the scoreboard first, with Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup scoring 37 seconds into the game. They added another goal later in the first period, leaving the Saints with a 2-0 deficit going into the first intermission.
In the second period, Greg Lapoint ‘25 scored for St. Lawrence, making the score 2-1. Then, in the third period, Lapoint scored again to tie the game at 2-2. The crowd at Appleton was electric at this point, with the St. Lawrence fans cheering their team on, hoping for them to score the winning goal. For most of the rest of the period, the score remained deadlocked, until the last few minutes of the game.
With a little over a minute remaining, senior captain Tim Makowski fired a shot from the blue line into the net, making the score 3-2 St. Lawrence. Tyler Cristall ‘26 then sealed the win with an empty-net goal, giving the Saints an exciting 4-2 comeback win over Clarkson.
Moving on to Saturday’s game, the Saints scored first, with senior captain Aleksi Peltonen firing a shot that deflected in the goal off of a Clarkson defender. Clarkson evened the score later in the first period, with Ryan Richardson scoring the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Still in the first period, the Saints went up 2-1 on a Reilly Moran ‘24 goal, then doubled their lead on a goal by Jordan Steinmetz ‘23. This gave St. Lawrence a 3-1 lead after the first period of play.
In the second period, the Knights pulled closer to the Saints on a Mathieu Gosselin goal, making the score 3-2 heading into the third period.
In the third, the Saints held off many Clarkson attempts to even up the score. The Knights were on the power play for seven minutes in the third period, off of St. Lawrence minor and major penalties, but the Saints did not give up a goal.
Then, Steinmetz added his second goal of the game, scoring an empty-net goal to make the score 4-2 and seal the win for St. Lawrence, giving them their second win in as many days against Clarkson.
This was a great weekend of games for the Saints, and their two wins over Clarkson gave them their first sweep over their rivals in the regular season weekend series since the 2008-2009 season.
St. Lawrence improved to a record of 13-13-0 and 8-6 in the ECAC with the two wins, putting them at fifth place in the ECAC Conference standings. The Saints have their next game today, Friday, Feb. 3, where they will make the trip to Providence, Rhode Island to play Brown University.
