April Fools: Bye Bye St. Lawrence, Hello St. Teresa

0

St. Lawrence University just dropped breaking news in what was its last news release under the same name. Wednesday evening, SLU leadership announced that starting this April 2024, SLU will become St. Teresa University. The name change comes after push from the community to rebrand what the university stands for.

St. Teresa is most commonly known as the patron saint of headaches. Administration hopes this will be a comforting change for a student body that is often afflicted with headaches and migraines. As a teen, Teresa was known for her ability to stir up trouble. She was rumored to be deeply fascinated with clothes, boys and rebelling against her father. In choosing a different name, administration carefully selected St. Teresa to represent the student body; Teresa is no stranger to stirring up trouble and rebelling against their parents.

What may be the most difficult change for students is the rebranding of a university favorite: the Egg O’ Larry. For decades, the familiar egg sandwich has become a daily staple for students past and present.

With the dissolution of the SLU name, the Egg O’Larry also faces a name rebranding. Available soon on the Get app will be the Egg O’ Terry, signifying the name of St. Teresa. Administration is hopeful that this unified approach in rebranding the university will be met with eagerness and support from the community.

Now, students might still be wondering one last question: what about the shield? It’s a valid question to ponder and one that administration took much deliberation to agree upon. After countless days and nights of discourse, a new symbol was created to rebrand the university. Students will be happy to see little change in the basic foundation of the St. Lawrence shield. Yet, changes have been made to the components of the shield in order to better match the university’s vision. Instead of the familiar cross and book filling the quadrants of the SLU shield will be two new icons: a boot and a squirrel. The silhouette of the boot represents the familiar sight of blundstones, which can be observed on the feet of almost anyone from the New England area. The squirrel symbolizes the mighty population of squirrels on campus whom have infiltrated their way into every corner of St. Lawrence. Administration hopes with the rebranding of the logo, that students will feel more connected to what the university stands for.

In the waning days of March, students had only a handful of opportunities to order their last Egg O’ Larry. The walls of Appleton Arena and Newell Field House have embraced their last chants of S-L-U. Turning the leaf into April, the St. Lawrence community will rally and sing kumbaya in the introduction of a brand new university. On the advent of April 1st, chants and screams of S-T-U will echo off the university buildings, signifying the campus’ decision to do out with the old and in with the new.
