Java Hosts First Event: Open Mic Night

Last Saturday, Java and SLU PAC collaborated to host the first open mic event of the semester,
following COVID guidelines while still providing a semblance of normalcy during an unusual
semester. In order to follow guidelines and keep everyone safe, Java required everyone to wear
masks, practice social distancing, and assigned time slots to ensure that there weren’t too many
people crowded at the site at once.
“It was great to have people performing in the venue again,” said house member and News Editor,
Tina Luchetta ’22. “It was also awesome having people outside and attending.”
For those who were not here last semester, it was their first time attending a Java show after a
year-long hiatus.
“Even with the restrictions in place, it just felt so nice to have a traditional aspect of our college lives
back again,” said Brynn Afton ’23. “I loved being able to dance outside with my friends and enjoy
great live performances.”
Not only was Java a fun time for those attending, the open mic event provided an opportunity for
singers and bands on-campus to perform and share their talents with the rest of the SLU
community.
“Our band has performed once in the past eight months, so it’s fantastic to be able to do what I love
once again and share it with other people,” said James Kemp ’23, drummer of band After Midnight. ’
The open mic was a fantastic opportunity for SLU students to come together and enjoy one of their
favorite aspects of campus life and also a good way for the Java house to connect with the
community once again.
“Everyone working at the Java venue and living in the house really missed connecting and jamming
with the SLU community,” said Luchetta ’22. “While we had to socially distance and wear masks, the
Java love was still felt and we hope to put on some more events before the semester ends.”
