Billboard Music Awards Finally Take Place
After a six-month COVID-induced delay, the Billboard Music Awards finally took place last week on October 14 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
The somber tone of 2020 was present throughout the award show with visible changes, including an empty venue and the presence of masks when it came to many of the performers and background dancers.
In addition, with the events surrounding topics of racial injustice, the pandemic, and the upcoming election that is looming ahead of us, artists encouraged viewers to stay safe, practice social distancing, wear masks, and remember to vote.
As Lizzo accepted her award for “Top song Sales Artist” in a dress that had the word “vote” printed all over it, she delivered a powerful speech about suppression and voting in order to have everyone’s voice head.
“Whether it’s through music, protest or your right to vote, use your power,” said Lizzo. “Use your voice and refuse to be suppressed.”
Additionally, Demi Lovato’s pre-recorded performance also touched on the topic of politics as she performed her song “Commander in Chief” which is aimed at Donald Trump.
With lyrics like the following: “We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyin’…while you line your pockets deep,” the message of the song is evident as it refers to Donald Trump’s poor handling of both the racial injustice events that have taken place this year and COVID-19, as he continues to undermine the virus, even after more than eight million Americans have been infected and more than 200, 000 lives have been lost.
Taking home three awards, for Best New Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, and Top Female Artist, Billie Eilish donned a face mask as urged viewers to stay safe and wear a mask.
Other powerful events from the night included a heartfelt and emotional performance by John Legend of his song “Never Break” as he dedicated to his wife, after the two of them recently lost their child moments after birth.
Additional winners were Harry Styles for the “Billboard Chart Achievement Award,” Khalid for “Top R&B Artist,” Cardi B for “Top Female Artist, and Luke Combs for “Top Country Artist.”
