Golden Globe Awards Recap: & Demi Moore’s Inspirational Speech

0

Held on January 5, the Golden Globe Awards were as shocking and entertaining as always, with some surprises along the way. The 82nd annual awards show recognizing film and TV of the past year was hosted by Nikki Glaser, marking the first time a woman has hosted the ceremony alone.

I found Glaser hilarious and a breath of fresh air for the awards show, especially after last year’s dumpster fire of monologues and scripted jokes. She was effortlessly amusing and captivating and seemed very comfortable in the space. She belonged there, and I hope she returns for future shows.

Regarding the actual awards, “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” won most big categories. I haven’t seen either of these films, so I won’t comment on them, but it is clear that there has been some backlash to these wins. The use of AI in “The Brutalist” has raised the question of whether authenticity and originality are valued in reception to art and whether it deserves consideration for award nominations. “Emilia Pérez” faced backlash due to being a Spanish film with little-to-no fluently speaking Spanish actors and actresses. Many critics found the lack of actual Mexican representation problematic for a film that revolves around Mexican characters in Mexico, among other issues. All I will say about this is that I don’t understand how any film could win Best Musical over “Wicked.” Sigh.

The ceremony also marked a first for actress Demi Moore, who stole the show with her amazing acceptance speech. She was my pick for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, and to my surprise and many others, she won. The actress seemed to be in just as much shock. However, she is very much deserving, as “The Substance” was one of her best performances yet. In the film, Moore portrays an actress aging out of the entertainment industry and struggling to accept it. She creates a younger, better version of herself via ‘the substance’ but quickly realizes that it was not as it had seemed and that if she had learned to love herself despite her imperfections, then she would know she had everything she needed within herself.

Moore opened her powerful speech by stating that this is the first (major) award she has ever won in her almost 50 years of acting. For an actress who has been so influential since the 1980s, it is crazy to think that this is her first-ever recognition for her work. She was robbed in 1991 with her performance in “Ghost,” but that’s a whole other article. Moore explained that early in her career, a producer told her she was a ‘popcorn actress,’ which made her believe she was not worthy of any awards or recognition. She revealed that she bought into this idea and, until receiving the script for “The Substance,” believed that she might have already accomplished all she could. That could not have been further from the truth.

Moore concluded her speech in an inspirational way, saying, “In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough, or skinny enough or successful enough, or just not enough. A woman told me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.'”

Listening to her accept the award, I realized Moore’s speech was the perfect lesson for us all in the new year. Her story is one of perseverance, so don’t give up what you love doing! You, alone, are in control of your story; don’t let anyone else try to write it for you… and whatever that means for you is where you belong. When we compare ourselves to others, whether in success, beauty or talent, we will only see our imperfections. However, realizing that our strengths are individualized and unique, we can start to love ourselves more for what we are rather than hating ourselves for what we are not. Oh, and watch “The Substance,” it’s great.
