Are you a poet? An artist perhaps? A hopeless romantic? Or maybe avidly anti-Valentine’s Day? Direly heart-broken? Send The Laurentian Magazine your best Valentine’s Day art or poem that either makes us swoon or breaks our heart. If you submit to thelaurentianmag@stlawu.edu by Saturday, Feb. 18, your piece will be reviewed by the club members for the chance to be chosen as a winner. The winners will be published in the Spring 2023 edition of The Laurentian Magazine, as well as being awarded some awesome prizes.
The Laurentian Magazine is the student creative writing and art magazine published each semester at St. Lawrence University. The magazine features fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art and photography from SLU students. In addition to submitting to the Valentine’s Day Contest, be sure to submit your creative writing or art for the general magazine deadline, which is April 1.
Every student can submit up to three different writing submissions, as well as infinite art and photography submissions. Writing submissions should be a maximum of 15 pages.
I think many students believe they must be a professional photographer with a fancy camera in order to submit photography to the magazine, but that is absolutely untrue. Some amazing photos that we have printed are simply photos that people have taken on their phones, whether that be when they have been traveling, capturing beatiful scenes of nature, or just getting wonderfully candid shots of people.
The Spring 2023 magazine will be released at the Launch Party on May 5 in the Winston Room at 5 p.m. At this event, you can of course pick up some of the beautifully designed magazines, as well as hearing readings and artist statements from some of the talented writers and artists published in the magazine. And to top it all off there will be plenty of free food.
If you are interested in joining The Laurentian Magazine team to help choose which submissions get published, curate writing and art contests such as this semester’s Valentine’s Day Contest, partake in super fun, creative events such as our poetry slam, and come on our writer’s retreat to a lake every spring, be sure to email the magazine asking to join the listserv. And come join at the weekly club meetings, which take place in the Student Media Room, top left of the Student Center, every Sunday at 5 p.m.
