Conor McGregor Set to Appear in Court Following Counts of Assault

Conor McGregor is as “notorious” as the nickname indicates. At just 29, he has made a name for himself not just in the boxing world but on an international stage as well.

McGregor is an Irish professional mixed martial artist and boxer. His mixed martial arts record is 21-3. 18 of his 21 wins were by knockout and 2 out of his 3 losses were by decision. He has only fought once in the boxing ring in a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather achieved a perfect 50-0 record after besting McGregor in the fight of the century. However, even with the loss, McGregor left the event having earned about $100 million.  You could say he’s been riding pretty high since the fight late last summer.

Additionally, a Netflix documentary revealed an all access look into McGregor’s life from his early fighting days to present. His rise from small town gyms to the biggest arenas in fighting has been fast and furious.

Now McGregor has been in the news for the wrong reasons. Earlier this month, McGregor was involved in an incident after a UFC 223 media event at Barclays Center. In the parking garage of the arena, McGregor was seen resisting, being held back and throwing traffic fences and carts at a coach bus that contained other UFC fighters and personnel.

He turned himself in on April 5 and was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief. He was released on a $50,000 bail and is set to appear in court June 14. According to ESPN, McGregor was released after a short arraignment and was told to stay away from the fighters injured in the incident.

After the incident, the three fights that were scheduled for the next day were cancelled. Michael Chiese, who suffered an eye injury in the incident, was announced unfit to fight. President of the UFC, Dana White, did not mince words when he spoke to the press following the event.

McGregor was stripped of his lightweight belt the week before, but White told the media that the incident was not a result of that. White said the incident was “the most disgusting thing that has ever happened in the history of this company.”

McGregor has developed an iconic reputation since his career began. He has made millions of dollars while getting his body beaten down and trains harder than anyone else and has become the face of combat sports.  He even recently celebrated the birth of his first born son.

Although his reputation has never been pristine, the incident certainly added fuel to a buringing fire, especially after the much-talked-about prefight antics of the Mayweather bout. McGregor will have to wait and see what his fate will be after the court date in mid-June, but he will have to do quite a lot to regain the positive fame he once had.
