Men’s Squash Beats Hamilton on Senior Day
Lewis Anderson’s ‘25 3-0 sweep capped off a resounding 7-2 victory for the St. Lawrence men’s squash team in their Sunday afternoon matchup against Hamilton at the Robie Squash Center in Canton, NY.
The Saints had been up all day, winning four of the first six matches, with two matches still ongoing when Anderson took the court for the One’s matchup against Hamilton’s William Rice. The scores ended 11-7, 11-6, and 11-2, but these are no tribute to the dominance displayed by Anderson. Trick shots and confident looks back at the crowd were a staple for the two-time all-American throughout the 19-minute match, the quickest of the day by far (next was a 26-minute long sweep by Jack Turvey ‘24).
The Saints dropped the Two’s match 3-2 in a very close finish, with Alexander Scott ‘26coming back from down two games to tie it, eventually losing 11-9 in the final bout in a back-and-forth game against Tate Suratt. Otherwise, their victory was considerable – the Three through Eight spots all picked up victories.
Harry Robson ‘25 in the Three spot and Vladimir Iglesias in the Fours both dropped their first games only to immediately turn on the gas, each winning their next three.
Hassan Madkour ‘25 found himself in a battle, trading matches back and forth and managing to close out the fifth 11-7 to earn another Saints victory – this was the closest win for the Saints. Four Saints earned a gentleman’s sweep 3-1 in their matches, and their other two victories came in full 3-0 sweep fashion.
Carlo Caffuzzi was the main bright spot for Hamilton, with a 3-0 victory against Gavin Cassidy ‘26 in the Nines spot, but it was not enough to put a dent in the St. Lawrence lead.
To cap off an ideal senior day celebration for the Saints, in an exhibition match against Carter Furmanek, Senior John Tobin ‘24 got the St. Lawrence home crowd into it with a huge comeback in the fourth game. Down 2-0 going into their third game, he pulled off a win 11-9 but then found himself down 10-7 in the fourth with the match on the line. He rallied behind thunderous cheers to pull even and eventually seek out a 14-12 win to tie up the match count. He ended up falling 11-4 to Furmanek in the fifth match to lose overall, but the crowd was no less excited for him.
St. Lawrence moved to 8-9 on the year, while Hamilton fell to 3-8.
The Saints look to use this momentum in the coming Liberty League Championships held at the Robie Squash Center on Feb. 10th.
