What makes the tennis team unique compared to other team sports at SLU?
Our team is only about nine to ten girls, so we have the chance to really get to know everyone. Our team is unique from other teams because when we’re out there competing in singles, we have to rely on our teammates to cheer us on from the sidelines. Other teams have the opportunity to work directly with their teammates in critical moments of competition, but as singles players, we build a really strong bond with our teammates because we know that our support for one another means that much more.
How was it playing in your last fall parents weekend at St. Lawrence?
The support from all the players’ parents in the crowd made the last match extra special, and we were able to finish out the fall season super strong. The energy from fans, parents, and teammates made me wish I had just one more fall season ahead.
What was your favorite part of the your fall season?
The best part of this past fall season was the Mary Hosking Invitational tournament at Williams Smith College in Geneva, NY. Since this tournament is the first one of the fall, it really sets the tone for the rest of the season. It’s also the first weekend that we spend time together on the road, so it was great to spend the weekend with the whole group as we became closer as a team.
Did you feel this was a successful fall season? How did you guys improve from last season?
This brief four week season was one of our best fall starts because we had players showcasing their skills in both singles and doubles in our tournament play. Obviously we’re a much younger team than last year, with half of our team as first years, so I think they bring a freshness and eagerness.
Is there a favorite tennis game you play during practice or in your career playing tennis? If so, what is it?
We always finish out a tough week of practice with our favorite drill — rush & crush. This drill is fun because it means players have to maintain high energy throughout the game, and you get to play with your doubles partner. This game is always one of our favorites because it takes us into matches for the weekend and we feel confident and energized when the drill is finished.
Your team travels a lot, what’s your go to playlist to stayed relaxed on those bus rides? What is your top 5 on that playlist?
Honestly I listen to a lot of podcasts on the van rides, or most of us just knock out for the 4 hour trips.
If I had to put some songs on a playlist for the ride that I know everyone would listen to, I’d probably add some Beyonce, Rihanna, Anderson Paak, and some oldies.
Imagine your as good as any tennis player in the world, who would you want to play against in the final of a U.S Open? How would you
I would want to play against Petra Kvitova because she is one of the nicest players on tour, and she has wicked lefty spin. I think to beat her I would have to be really consistent but also take some risks going down the line with a few shots.
What’s your favorite food to make?
My favorite food to make is any roasted vegetable with lots and lots (and I mean lots) of hot sauce.
