Women’s Ice Hockey Series vs Colgate

0

After a tricky start to the season due to four COVID-19 postponements, St. Lawrence’s Women’s Ice Hockey faced the Colgate Raiders in a two game weekend series. Heading into Friday’s game ranked fifth in the USCHO, Colgate led the ECAC (four active programs; Colgate, St. Lawrence, Clarkson, Quinnipiac) with 16 league points to St. Lawrence’s 8.

The Saint’s program faced the Raiders late last month losing both back to back games, 2-3 and 0-1. Both games went to overtime, keeping the competition neck and neck. Friday’s game was no exception. Assistant Coach Mare MacDougall was quoted after the game stating, “Our games versus Colgate are always so fast and fun to watch, and this one was certainly no exception to that.”

Friday’s game ended in a 3-2 impressive win for St. Lawrence. Shailyn Snow, a sophomore from Bay Roberts, Newfoundland scored first for the Saints with an unassisted goal off a power play roughly 7 minutes into the first period. Snow played in 30 games and added 23 points for St. Lawrence in the 2019-2020 season and while this season has been unpredictable, Snow has been a solid forward for the team.

More than back from the BFL National Canadian Women’s Team Training Camp, sophomore Julia Gosling has already shown the college hockey world her talents in a mere five games in the 2020 season. Putting up an impressive 4 goals in 4 games, Gosling’s offensive skills had been missed by the Saints. Her powerful one-timer on Friday’s game helped give St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders put up a goal early in the second period making it a one point game. Luckily for the Saints, Snow was able to extend the lead with another unassisted goal in the third. Thanks to strong goaltending efforts from Lucy Morgan, sophomore from Mandan, North Dakota, St. Lawrence was able to capture the win, 3-2. Morgan ended the ECAC contest with 36 saves, making her save percentage .955.

Saturday’s game was, unfortunately, a different story for the Saints. Heading down to the Class of 1965 Arena at Colgate for their last matchup, the Saints fell to Colgate 5-0. The Raiders came out hot, scoring 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of the first period, and their roll continued on. Taking the advantage on power plays, Colgate held St. Lawrence off from goal opportunities, having held a 34-25 advantage in shots on goal.

Morgan made 17 saves in 40 minutes for the Saints and key time and stops from Jaimie Rainville, junior goalie from Welland, Ontario, kept Colgate scoreless in the third period. MacDougall recognized that St. Lawrence fell short however stating, “But we are most certainly proud of the way our team played hard, stuck together and competed until the final buzzer.”

The Saints are now 2-6-0 overall and 2-5-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Due to COVID-19 postponements earlier in the month, the Saints look to this weekend for matchups with Route 11 rival, Clarkson.
