Women’s Hockey Wins On Senior Day

0

Heading into the weekend, the St. Lawrence Women’s hockey team was sitting at #8 in ECAC rankings, and depending upon their play, as well as points gained by Union College, playoff rankings were still up in the air. Coming off an unfortunate loss to #5 nationally ranked Princeton on Friday, the women headed into Saturday’s match against #10 Quinnipiac with a clean slate, hoping to avenge their loss to the Bobcats earlier in the season.

Though the lead afterward was short lived, a five-hole goal from junior forward Charlea Pederson gave the Saints the advantage through the first two periods. Eight minutes into the final period, the Bobcats scored two goals within eight seconds, one from junior Taylor House, and the other, a lucky bounce shot from the red line from senior Kenzie Trater. While Quinnipiac kept the lead for a few minutes after, the Saints did not give up. Increasing their on-ice tenacity, junior defenseman Skylar Podvey took a hard shot on net, tying the game at 2-2. With nine minutes to play in regulation, the Saints honed their efforts on getting at least one more goal before the third period ended. Finding a redirect opportunity, senior center Kayla Vespa secured the win for the Saints. With an assist from left wing senior Maggie McLaughlin, it was only appropriate that on Senior Day these two players brought home the victory.

Freshman goalie Lucy Morgan recorded 18 saves on the day with a huge save on a breakaway by Quinnipiac; her efforts continue to be extremely impressive this season.

Having secured a spot in the ECAC Playoffs, the women have two more games left, facing Dartmouth College and Harvard University on the Feb. 21 and 22. With a 5-1 win against Dartmouth and a 2-1 loss against Harvard, this weekend’s games are a must watch.

Celebrating Senior Day, the program recognized eight seniors for their commitment to the program following the win. Coach Chris Wells praised their recent accomplishments in Appleton Arena stating post-game, “They won the first game in renovated Appleton with a senior scoring and their last with a senior scoring.” The St. Lawrence community thanks the seniors for their dedication over the past four years:
