St. Lawrence Sports Spotlight: Women’s Hockey and Basketball
The St. Lawrence University Women’s Hockey and Women’s Basketball teams have both been playing awesome as of late, and they will be highlighted in this edition of Saints Sports Spotlight.
The 6th-ranked Women’s Hockey team currently have a record of 21-9, and are 8-1 in their last nine games. These haven’t been easy games either, as out of the nine games the past five have been against opponents that were ranked in the top 15 teams in the entire nation.
On Jan. 20, St. Lawrence beat #14 Yale 4-2, led by three points apiece from Abby Hustler ’25 and Aly McLeod ’24. In their next game, they picked up a very big win over cross-town rivals and 3rd-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights 1-0 on a game-winning third period goal from Hustler.
They did lose their rematch the next day to the Golden Knights by a score of 6-4 for their one loss out of their last nine, but they have been able to rebound from that loss in their next two games.
On Friday, Feb. 2, they beat #6 Cornell Big Red 2-1, with Melissa Jefferies ’24 scoring the winner early in the third period. The very next day, on Saturday, Feb. 3, St. Lawrence picked up another important win; this one against the 3rd-ranked Colgate Raiders. The Saints won 3-2 in overtime, with Anna Segedi ’25 netting the winner. The next game for St. Lawrence will be at #9 Quinnipiac on Friday, Feb. 9 at 6:00 P.M.
Moving to Women’s Basketball, they have won six of their past seven contests and brought their record back to an even .500 at 11-11. On Saturday, Jan. 20, St. Lawrence beat the RIT Tigers 50-47, with Elizabeth Flynn ’27 scoring 19 points and adding 13 rebounds for the Saints.
They followed this up with a 66-50 win over Clarkson; Flynn scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead the Saints. In their next game they beat Bard 68-40, with Norah Neisz ’27 scoring 12 points for the Saints in the victory.
St. Lawrence lost to Vassar in their next contest to end the three game winning streak but rebounded from this loss with another three consecutive wins.
They beat RIT 64-62 on Friday, Feb. 2, with Jackie Malley ’26 scoring 20 points and Cam Roberts ’24 netting a game-winning layup with 0.7 seconds left in the game. The Saints won again the next day, beating William Smith 59-47 behind 20 points from Flynn.
In their most recent contest on Tuesday, Feb. 6, they beat SUNY Polytechnic Institute 54-41, led by Margaret Dougher ‘26 with 14 points. The next game for St. Lawrence will be at Ithaca on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5:30.
