Saints Sports Team of the Week: Softball
The St. Lawrence University Softball team has gotten off to an outstanding start to their 2024 season. Through their first 15 games of the season, they’ve gotten off to a 10-5 start, and are currently on a three-game winning streak.
In their first six games of the season the Saints only went 2-4, losing to Wesleyan, Endicott, Bates, and Middlebury, and beating Washington and Jefferson and Nazareth. Since March 20th, however, the Saints have been on an absolute tear, going 8-1.
Firstly, on March 21st the Saints achieved an impressive feat, winning three games in a single day. They beat Lawrence 3-1 at 9:45 a.m., Wellesley 4-3 at 11:45 a.m., and Keuka 14-4 at 6:30 p.m. Then, on March 29th they beat SUNY Canton twice, the first 16-0 and the second 13-5. The next day, they had their only loss of this stretch, a 7-0 defeat to Oswego State, but later that day they beat Oswego State 9-4.
Next, this Monday, they added to their win column with 6-2 and 6-5 wins over SUNY Poly. Meredith Rose ’24 has led the way for the Saints, batting an impressive .404 average with 21 hits, 17 runs batted in, and one home run.
Allison Kloft ’27 has also been a great contributor for the Saints, batting an average of .389 with 21 hits and 12 runs batted in.
Maeve Thompson ’27 has a batting average of .382 along with 21 hits, a home run, and 11 runs batted in.
On the mound, Layne Fritz ’26 has been undefeated this year for the Saints, going 4-0 with an ERA of 2.95 in 19 total innings pitched.
Izzy Melanson ’27 has also been solid with an ERA of 3.15 in33.1 innings pitched on the season, while Sophie Berryhill ’25 has been impressive as well on the mound with a 3.44 ERA in 38.2 total innings pitched.
Moving forward, this weekend the Saints will travel to Potsdam and play their Route 11 rivals, the Clarkson Golden Knights, on this Sunday twice, with the first game at 1 p.m. and the second at 3 p.m.
Next Tuesday, the Saints will play at home in two games against Plattsburgh, with the first at 3 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m., so if you need something to do on Tuesday afternoon, come support the Saints!
