Men’s Lacrosse Beats #4 RPI, Earns No. 2 Seed in Liberty League Tournament
The No. 3 St. Lawrence Men’s Lacrosse team capped off their 2024 regular season with a bang last Saturday, defeating the RPI Engineers 15-10 on the road in Troy, New York. This was a pivotal victory for the Saints, as it gave them the second seed and first round home fied advantage in the upcoming Liberty League tournament.
The Liberty League is the most competitive conference in all of Division III Lacrosse by far, currently featuring three of the top four teams in the nation and four of the top eight.
RIT is the second-ranked team in the country, the Saints are third, RPI is fourth, and Union is eighth. RIT, RPI, and SLU all tied for first in the league with 6-1 records, and with tie- breakers, RIT earned the number one seed in the league tournament, SLU second, and RPI third.
This is why last Saturday’s win was so pivotal, as it allowed SLU to jump RPI in the standings and earn a home semifinal Liberty League tournament game.
In this win, Judge Murphy ’24 starred for St. Lawrence, scoring an outstanding six goals, along with an assist, totaling seven points in the contest.
Daniel Mahoney ’27 added to the scoring with four goals of his own, Ted Wilson ’26 had two goals, and Paddy Condon ’25, Zack Corsi ’25, and Brian Souza ’26 added one goal each.
Michael Marinello ’25 played well in goal for St. Lawrence, having 13 saves and getting the win for the Saints despite the Engineers having more shots than the Saints with a 51-39 edge on that statistic.
For the regular season, the Saints finished up with a 14-2 record. Murphy led the way for the team, scoring a whopping 55 goals in 16 games, along with tallying 25 assists.
Ben Hutchinson ’24 was second for the team in goals with 38 and led the team in assists with 26, while Mahoney was third in goals with 22 and also had seven assists. Also, Condon made a significant contribution to the team’s success with his face-offs, winning 231 out of 334 for a win percentage of .689.
Looking ahead to later today, this afternoon at 4, the Saints will play RPI at home at North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium. The winner of this game will advance to play the winner of the other semifinal game, Union at RPI, in the Liberty League Championship on Sunday, May 7, which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
St. Lawrence hasn’t won a Liberty League Lacrosse Championship since they won four in a row from 2006-2009, and RPI has won eleven straight Liberty League championships dating back to 2012.
