Saints VS. Statesmen
Cozzens Field
And after everything our Saints have done, they all streamed out from Hobart’s locker room and took to Cozzens Field, this past Saturday, to play their last game of the season.
It was cold there. You could feel it. While we watched the Statesmen launch the ball off from the starting whistle, while we watched them dart deep throw-ins into the Saints’ box from far out, while we watched them shoot shots around the Saint’s net, an unapologetic breeze tore through the stands.
But the sky was clear. There wasn’t a cloud out there to be seen. This day was a day for soccer, and our Saints came out to play—that could not be denied.
In the sixth minute, when the Saints swung the ball around the Statesmen defenders, a fan muttered, “Oh, no. Oh, no. That was sketchy.” A pass was then sent to Andrew Lenfant ‘22, who had a shot that erred just wide of the post.
In response, cheers came from the bleachers, reminding us that regardless of the distance, the cold, or the busyness of our daily lives, fans of the Saints came from all over to watch the game. There was substantial portion filled with SLU hats, SLU sweatshirts, and SLU blankets, and every so often you could hear, “Lets go red! C’mon boys!”
During the pregame warm up, which was accompanied by a FIFA soundtrack-playlist, it was announced on the loud speakers that the Hobart Statesmen had won 4-0 to the Bard Raptors the week before and were going into the game with a record of 12-4-1.
Their conference record was 5-2-1, which held them in 3rd place on the Liberty League standings.
A week before this game, our Saints took down the Skidmore Thoroughbreds 1-0 at sunny Sandy MacAllaster Field. Keeper, Ben Woelfinger ’23, kept the scoreboard clean, and Reynolds ’22 scored his fifth goal of the season.
In the ninth minute of the game Matthew Lawlor ’21 took the ball down the line, and passed the ball over a defender’s head to Reynolds ‘22, who clobbered it into the bottom left corner of the goal.
At Cozzens Field, it was announced that the Saints had a record of 6-7-1.
Their conference record was 3-4-1, which marked them in 7th place on the Liberty League standings; a position they needed to move up from, in order to make a run for the playoffs.
After the announcement, Miles Levy ’23 sauced me a wave like usual, and, soon enough, the clock reset, our Saints threw on their red and white away jerseys, and the starters followed the referees out to the center of the field and faced the bleachers.
We proceeded to take off our hats, turn towards our flag, and listen to our national anthem.
