0

Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Both teams had the best record in their respective conferences, earning both teams the number one seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Going into the game, both teams’ quarterbacks were banged up from the long season that they had already played. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was dealing with a high ankle sprain he had suffered during the divisional round playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was dealing with a ligament sprain in his shoulder that he had been dealing with since a week 15 game against the Chicago Bears. This brought an element of uncertainty to the team’s star quarterback’s performance in the biggest game of the year.

In the first half, the Eagles’ defense held the Chiefs, one of the best offenses in the league, to two touchdowns, while their offense scored three and a field goal. This put the Eagles up ten points at the half, 24-14. Going into halftime, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Patrick Mahomes, as he had come off the field limping after being tackled late in the 2nd quarter. Meanwhile, the Eagles went to the locker room with all of the momentum, scoring a field goal as time ran out.

The Chiefs received the ball at the start of halftime, driving the ball 75 yards on ten plays, including a 15-yard scramble by Patrick Mahomes, despite worries over his ankle injury. After an Eagles field goal by Jake Elliot, the Chiefs took the lead for the first time in the game 28-27 on a 5-yard pass to Kadarius Tony. The momentum shifted as the Chiefs’ defense stopped the Eagles on their next possession, giving them the opportunity to more decisively take the lead. On the punt return, Kadarius Tony returned the ball 65 yards from the 30-yard line to set the Chiefs up to score a touchdown, putting them up 35-27. The Eagles answered, tying the game at 35 with five minutes remaining on the clock.

The Chiefs started with the ball on their 25-yard line. It looked as though the Eagles defense was going to hold the Chiefs to a field goal with 1:48 left in the game. However, holding was called on by the Eagles defense and the Chiefs were able to advance to the 7-yard line and kick and field goal. This left the Eagles with only eight seconds remaining to attempt a hail Mary, which fell short of the end zone.  This ended the third highest scoring Super Bowl in history, with 73 points scored between the two teams.
