Fall Sports Recap: Playoffs Clinched and Senior Day Celebrations

During this past week of competition, many fall athletics teams clinched their playoffs positions, while some are still awaiting results from other teams in the league. Many teams also had their senior day competitions to honor and recognize the hard work of seniors in the class of 2022.  

After suffering a loss to Ithaca College on Friday night, Field Hockey was able to clinch their playoffs spot with a thrilling victory over Union College on Sunday at Hall-Leet Stadium. According to the Saints Athletics press release, this is the Field Hockey team’s first playoffs spot since 2011. Junior McKenzie Haberl had four goals and two assists, earning her Offensive Performer of the Week.  

Junior Captain Maggie Green said it was an unexpected, pleasant victory.  

“We really showed up and crushed them,” she said.  

Football had a close loss to Hobart College, with a score of 17-13. First-year quarterback Daniel Lawther had a career-high of 209 yards and rushed 40 yards. The football team ends their season Nov. 13.  

Women’s Hockey had a victory over Rochester Institute of Technology, winning 3-0. According to the post-game press release, goalies Caitlin Whitehead and Jaime Ranville had a shutout with Whitehead stopping six goals and Ranville stopping seven.  

Both Men’s and Women’s Crew opened their seasons this past weekend. Both teams placed 32nd in the prestigious Head of the Charles Race in Cambridge, MA. 

Men’s Soccer celebrated their seniors on Saturday in their last home game against Skidmore. They came out victorious with a 3-2 victory. Junior Marvin Sibanda scored in the first 30 seconds of the game to start the Saints off strong.  

Senior Captain Quinn Houseman said it was a bittersweet ending to his last regular season  game on Sandy MacAllister field.  

“It was an electric game, and I couldn’t have asked for a more thrilling victory to end my career on Sandy,” he said.  

Women’s Soccer also had a victory over SUNY Canton on Wednesday, and a Liberty League victory over Skidmore, winning 6-0 and 2-1 respectively. They await their playoffs position after they wrap up Liberty League play this weekend which will also be their senior day celebration.  

Women’s Volleyball clinched their playoff spot with victories over Skidmore College and Union College on the road this weekend. The Saints enter Liberty League Playoffs as the fourth seed and will face the first seed, Rochester Institute of Technology at Rochester on Friday, Nov. 4. Their senior day is this Saturday, Oct. 30 against SUNY Cortland at 3 pm.  

Volleyball also had a victory over SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday.  Senior Natalie Piper earned Liberty League Performer of the Week for back-to-back weeks.
