Swimmers Shatter Records

This past weekend, the St. Lawrence women’s swimming program broke records that had not been broken in a long time. It was the Liberty League Championships for both the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams. Personal bests and school records were achieved by groups and individuals on both the men’s and women’s side. The Liberty League Championships were held on Friday and Saturday at Ithaca College. 

Sophomore Riley Gobora ’22 recorded yet another personal best this weekend, breaking her own school record at the Liberty League 100 butterfly. She became champion with a final time of 57.16, taking 0.24 seconds off the record she had previously set. She is now a back to back champion in the 100 butterfly.         

The 800-yard freestyle relay team broke a 33-year-old school record to finish in fifth place. The team consisted of Riley Gobora ’22, Emily McCormick ’21, Amanda Meurer ’21 and Madeleine Holodnik ’20. They finished more than three seconds faster than the record set in 1987, with a time of seven minutes and 53.75 seconds. The team stood in seventh place after Friday. 

On Saturday, McCormick finished in second in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She had the top performance for the Saints in the final day of competition. She broke 18 minutes for the first time, with a time of 17:52.76. Senior Holodnik had a person best on Saturday in the same event. She finished fourth with a time of 18:01.91. 

Gobora, Holodnik, Meurer, and McCormick performed well in St. Lawrence’s 400 free relay. They finished fifth with a time of 3:39.55, which happened to be just 0.5 seconds short of the program record. The Lady Saints finished the weekend in seventh place in the team standings, scoring 554 points. The winner of the event was Ithaca College, scoring an impressive 1,513.5 points.
