In a challenging game on Sept. 2, 2023, the St. Lawrence University football team, encountered a formidable opponent in the Endicott College Gulls, ultimately falling short with a score of 31-0. This game brought to light the team’s ongoing struggles and areas needing improvement.

Quarterback Danny Lawther ‘25 faced considerable challenges during this match. He completed 8 of 14 attempts, gaining a total of 43 passing yards, which was a tough outing for him. Lawther experienced difficulties with accuracy and decision-making, making it a tough day for the team. It’s clear that he had a challenging game.

However, it’s important to note that Lawther was not solely responsible for the Saints’ struggles. The entire offense had a difficult time, managing only 111 yards during the entire game. This lackluster performance underscored the need for better preparation and execution as a team. They struggled to generate momentum or sustain drives, revealing areas in need of improvement.

On the other hand, the Gulls had a successful game, accumulating an impressive 367 all-purpose yards. They displayed preparation, determination and flawless execution. The significant difference between the two teams was evident in every aspect of the game, from offense to defense and special teams.

The accountability for this challenging loss ultimately falls on the shoulders of Saints’ Head Coach, Dan Puckhaber. As the leader of the team, it is his responsibility to ensure that the team is mentally and physically prepared, to strategize effectively, and to make necessary adjustments during the game. Unfortunately, Puckhaber seemed to face challenges in these areas and was outmatched by his counterpart on the Endicott sideline.

Puckhaber’s struggle to motivate his team raises concerns. The lack of discipline, execution, and a clear game plan suggests that the coaching staff may be facing difficulties in fulfilling their roles. If this trend persists, the university may need to consider taking action to address the situation.

The Saints’ loss to the Gulls was more than just a defeat; it revealed areas that require attention and improvement. Coach Puckhaber holds the key to addressing these challenges and making necessary changes. The loyal Saints’ supporters deserve a better performance, and it’s essential that the team’s leadership takes steps to deliver on that promise.
