Underdog Nationals Bring Home World Series for First Time
Every year, a team wins the World Series and a city celebrates. This year, it was a new team and a new city. After an awful start to the baseball season, the Washington Nationals overcame adversity and fought hard in the playoffs to make history by winning their first World Series title 6-2 against the Houston Astros. The Nationals’ World Series win against the Astros showed a massive amount of strength as it required all seven games to crown a champion.
After losing 31 out of their first 50 games at the start of the season, the Nationals knew that they had to bounce back if they wanted to #StayInTheFight. This motto was very fitting for the Nationals, as they trailed in almost every elimination game but were able to put up a fight to make it to the playoffs and ultimately win the World Series. The Nationals’ win wasn’t the only part of the World Series that made history. The Houston Astros are the first team to ever lose four games at home in a best-of-seven-series in MLB, NBA, or NHL history. Yes, you read that right.
The best part about this win was that it brought sports teams and the community together in D.C. Throughout the playoffs, the Washington Capitals were supporting the Nationals every step of the way. They wore Nationals jerseys to their NHL games, tweeted #StayInTheFight, and hosted the Nationals on Sunday evening at Capital One Arena during their game against the Calgary Flames for a ceremony and celebration.
The Nationals players loved it when they were invited into the Capitals ‘locker room to announce the starting lineup. This win also brought attention to the fact that the Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Mystics (WNBA), and now the Washington Nationals (MLB) all won championships in either 2018 or 2019. What a great time to be a Washington sports fan!
Jay Bolton ‘20, a senior from Washington, D.C. and big time Washington sports fan, had a few words to say about this historic win. “This is the second time in my life that a D.C. team has won a championship. Winning a championship brings so much pride to a city and it’s an unbelievable feeling when an underdog brings home the trophy,” said Bolton. He also explained what it meant to see his team win their first World Series. “I felt so much joy it was just such an exciting moment watching the final pitch being thrown. He threw a ball way outside the box, the batter bit on it and then the excitement erupted inside of me, knowing that my city had just won the World Series for the first time ever,” exclaimed Bolton.
The Nationals are now the best team in baseball and brought D.C. together to celebrate a win for the ages. The fight is finished.
