The St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team had a significant victory over the fourth-ranked Ohio State University women’s hockey team by a close score of 3-2.
The Saints began the game by getting on the scoreboard, taking advantage of a power play for their first goal of the game, which was scored by Skylar Podvey ’21.
The second score for the Saints came from Steph Keryluk ’20. St. Lawrence Women’s Head Coach, Chris Wells stated, “that was a great start to the game for us with the power play goals.”
The Buckeyes would not give up and they would remain persistent in the game as they would go on to score a goal about midway through the second period to cut the lead in half.
The second goal by the Buckeyes was scored about 30 seconds into the third period.
Finally, Natalie Wozney ’21 would go on to score the goal that gave the Saints the victory over the Buckeyes at about the halfway point of the third period.
This was a significant win for the Saints, especially considering how they won.
The Ohio State women’s hockey team is a formidable defensive team and their statistics as a team certainly confirm that. They came in having given up one power play goal out of 32 opportunities that were available to their opponents.
This being said, the fact that the SLU women’s hockey team was able to beat a higher seeded opponent at their strength, which was defending power plays to the point where it became a weakness in the throes of competition, shows how potent and explosive their offense can be even on the toughest defensive teams in the country.
It also showed their ability to uniquely strategize on how to go about attacking defenses.
Along those lines, the Saints were also solid defensively, not allowing the Buckeye women to score on a single power play in two opportunities that presented themselves in the course of the game.
With this win, the no. 10 ranked St. Lawrence women improved their record to 4-5-1.
The no. 4 ranked Ohio State women dropped to a 6-3-0 record in their season.
