Saint’s Baseball Impresses against SUNY Canton: John Tank

The St. Lawrence baseball team had a very successful weekend as they won four out of their five games against SUNY Canton, snapping an eight game losing streak.  The team is now 12-9 overall and looking to keep their hot streak going.

The Saints started off the weekend with an 8-3 loss against SUNY Canton, but would bounce back in their next game thanks to an incredibly strong outing from sophomore pitcher Sam Downes.  Downes was fantastic has he would pitch a five-hit shutout helping the team picked up a 4-0 win. Senior Mark Syron’s also would add two RBI’s to round out an impressive victory.

The next day the Saints would pick up right where they left off as they would rallying to beat SUNY Canton 9-3 in their first game of three.  Despite the impressive margin of victory, the team found themselves in a 3-0 hole early in the contest.  However, they countered in the very next inning tying the game up 3-3.  It was the third inning where the Saints really took over and never looked back.  With one swing of the bat, sophomore, Adam Reichel would blow the game wide open, unloading the bases with a grand slam.  The Saints would tack on two more runs and shut out the Kangaroos for the rest of game, picking up another impressive team win.  Reichel was locked in throughout accounting for 5 of St. Lawrence’s 9 runs.

In the second game of their triple-header, the Saints were even more impressive.  With the game tied 1-1 going into the 5thinning, the team opened up scoring again, putting up 5 runs against SUNY Canton in the inning.  The Saints would then continue their impressive display of hitting, as they then put up another 3 runs in the 6th inning.  The pitching staff was equally impressive, only allowing 1 run leading to a dominating 9-1 victory.

In their final game of the weekend, the Saints once again picked up the win and showed off their flare for the dramatic as well.  After the offense seemingly could not be stopped in the first two games, the team could not muster anything, as they found themselves in a 2-0 hole going into the 7th and final inning.  The Saints did not simply throw in the towel, as senior Chris Fernandez would score on a passed ball error to cut the deficit to 2-1.  It was there where freshman Michael LeFervre would step up to be the hero for the Saints as he ended the game with a single to left center driving in the final two runs to scores, as the Saints would win in awalk-off fashion.

The team will be on the road next to play two more games against fellow Liberty League members, Union on April 18th and 19th.
