Dear Dub: What Does Feminism Mean to You?

I’m Nach Insaurralde ‘25, a junior majoring in anthropology and minoring in gender studies. I came all the way from José C. Paz, Argentina, and I love living at our house because of our fearlessness and determination to make an impact in the St. Lawrence University community. In my mind, a feminist is someone who recognizes that gender can be a site of struggle and who acts so that this struggle stops limiting our lives.

I’m Grace Keenan ‘25 (she/her), and I am a junior majoring in Anthropology and double minoring in Gender and Sexuality studies and History. I am originally from Scarborough, Maine, and this will be my second year living in the Dub. To me, a feminist is a person who is accepting and appreciative of people no matter their identity and someone who strives to spread this mindset to others.

I’m Allison House ‘26 (she/her), a sophomore studying math and geology. I am from a small town called Weedsport in the Finger Lakes of New York. This is my first semester in the Dub, and I am excited to continue providing the resources many SLU students use the Dub for. A feminist, to me, is someone who acknowledges that everyone’s story is different and important and does their best to continue to learn how to be respectful and kind by listening before anything else.

slayyyyyyyyyyyy I’m Cas Nowik ‘26, a sophomore majoring in sociology with a minor in gender studies. I use they/them pronouns & I’m from Binghamton, New York, and this is my first year living in the Dub! I am beyond excited to be living here to make an impact on our SLU community! To be and live a feminist life, to me, is to love and accept anyone, no matter their identity; it is also to promote ways of living that strive to make others feel included and at home in their identity.

I’m Jordan Kulbe ‘25 (she/her), a junior majoring in Conservation biology and minoring in African studies (I’ll be going abroad to Kenya next semester)! I am from the small midcoast town of Searsmont, Maine, and am a lover of all animals, great and small. To me, a feminist is someone who is accepting and supportive of people from all walks of life and continually makes an effort to learn how to make spaces safer for others.

I’m Ally Dettor ‘26 (she/her), a sophomore majoring in Government and History with a minor in European Studies. I’m from Syracuse, NY (bleed orange), and hearing about the Dub at SLU made me want to come here even more. It’s my first year living in the house, and I’m so incredibly excited to work with my lovely housemates to promote a welcoming campus environment and help get essential resources to our students. To me, feminism means equality, and not only that but acknowledging and working towards promoting a better and safer society while keeping in mind the inequalities between different positionalities.

Hi, my name is Anja Simic ‘25 (she/her). I’m a junior majoring in Computer Science. I come from a little city called Niš in Serbia, and this is my first year living in the Dub. I’m very excited to live in a house that recognizes the everyday challenges of embracing who you are while dealing with society’s opinion about it. To me, a feminist is someone who advocates for gender equality while understanding how the existing inequality is experienced differently in different cultural contexts.

I’m Agata Faran ‘26 (she/her), and I’m a sophomore from Gdansk in Poland. I’m majoring in Neuroscience and Art with a minor in Chemistry, and in the time I’m not in the laboratory, I live at the Dub. I wanted to apply to the Dub since the first week of SLU when I saw the house and instantly felt the comfort of that space. To me, feminism means breaking the status quo, going out of your comfort zone, and following the change.
