Happy Daze: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

0

In a world where we surround ourselves with curated social media feeds and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, we are faced with polarity and a lot of it. Based on what/who we interact with, Algorithms quickly learn our interests, our social life, environment, and most importantly: our opinions, values and beliefs. It will then specifically spew content that is correlated with your identity to gain your attention.

The reason why many don’t see the problem lies in the fact that it sometimes goes unnoticed. For example, when you go through your feed, you are more likely to think about what you are watching, not what you haven’t watched. Without exposure to new ideas and others’ belief systems, one will not only become very confident in what they think, but they will become intolerant of conflicting ideas.

This is harmful as it hinders growth, weakens tolerance and ultimately leads to the polarized climate we know today. Sometimes, we may not even notice. However, algorithms are here to stay, so how can we expose ourselves to new ideas and people? The answer may be simpler than you think.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone is key to building tolerance and acceptance in yourself and your community. In this, you learn to become more empathetic and open, even if it is uncomfortable. As the St. Lawrence University Diversity Statement would say, we have to be “willing to risk difficulty and discomfort in working towards achieving a community that celebrates and respects diversity in all of its forms.” Stepping out of your comfort zone will transform your ability to adapt, learn, and thrive in diverse and challenging situations.

With new ideas comes new opportunities. Opportunities for connection, knowledge, discussion, and more that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. If you find yourself thinking about all the opportunities missed, think about the abundance of opportunities in your future. You always have the chance to step out of your comfort zone; you just may not know where to look.

First, you must identify your comfort zone. Start with what you are comfortable with. Then, consider situations in your work, social life or personal life where you felt your boundaries of comfortability were pushed safely; get an idea of where your comfort zone lies. Secondly, set a clear goal of what you want to achieve by stepping out of your comfort zone, as this will give you motivation. Thirdly, start small. Gradually challenge yourself and check in with yourself if you start to ‘shut down.’

Next, welcome uncertainty and lean into feelings of uncomfortablility. Embrace these feelings as opportunities for growth. Lastly, reflect on your experiences and seek support if needed. Take the time to reflect on what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown; this can reinforce your motivation to continue pushing your boundaries.

At this time, you may choose to seek support for encouragement and guidance throughout the process, and that is okay and healthy. Above all, remember to be kind to yourself throughout the process. It’s okay to make mistakes and face setbacks. What matters is that you’re making an effort to grow and learn.

So, as a new semester rears its ugly head, take advantage of the resources SLU provides and step out of your comfort zone safely. This semester, face your fears. Greet strangers. Inhabit spaces you’ve never before. Take that class you weren’t sure about. Talk to people you usually wouldn’t. Just invite those conversations into your life and see what happens. The effects might surprise you.
