Happy Daze: How To Support Activists and Prevent Burnout

 It is no surprise that current global events have come to the forefront of many discussions among students and faculty as we see a rise in activism and protests on campus. It can sometimes be hard to know how to support our friends, or even ourselves, who are activists, so for this week’s piece, I will focus on providing support for those fighting for justice. 

Supporting activists’ mental health is vital as they are exposed to traumatic events and topics —some of which they may be tied to personally — and fight against powerful systems of oppression and discrimination. Facing these numerous challenges while striving for change and social justice can cause burnout and health issues. This is why it is important to know how to support those fighting for justice in the long run. Here are key ways to support activists’ mental health: 

1. Establishing Safe Spaces: Establish safe environments where activists can express their feelings without judgment. This could be in the form of support groups, online forums, or peaceful protests where they can share experiences and emotions. In creating safe spaces, it is critical for people to recognize their privilege on certain topics and not dominate the discussion or talk too much. Instead, give the space for those directly impacted to share their stories and amplify their voices. 

2. Building Support Networks: Create networks of support for activists, both within their cause and in broader communities. Having a strong support system can relieve feelings of isolation and provide a sense of solidarity. 

3. Encouraging Rest and Recovery: Emphasize the importance of rest and breaks. Activism can be all-consuming, leading to burnout. It is essential that activists take time off for self-preservation so they have the longevity to continue to fight for justice. 

4. Conducting Regular Check-Ins: Conduct regular check-ins with activists. This needs to be done well, though. It is important that the activists in your life know that you care for them. Try to make these check-ins face-to-face and offer support without judgment, advice, or cliche statements like “feel better.” Make sure there is enough time to adequately address activists and their well-being on a regular basis. 

5. Fostering Understanding: Many of your activist friends want you to know about the cause they are fighting for and stand in solidarity with them. This doesn’t mean that you have to agree with your activist friends, but question your assumptions, examine your own biases, and be ready to learn. Do some of your own research for reputable news sources and stay up-to-date on current events. It’s important not to put the weight of explaining the problem on your activist friends who already face an intense amount of emotional labor. 

Overall, activism involves dedication, perseverance, and commitment to challenging and complex issues. In a time when activism and awareness on campus are increasing, it’s crucial to address the well-being of those at the forefront. 

Establishing safe spaces, building support networks, advocating for rest, conducting thoughtful check-ins, and fostering a deeper understanding of their cause are just some ways you can support activists, ensuring they can continue their work.
