In Gaga’s Name We Pray
Let’s talk Gaga. As a human with a soul and working ears, I am obviously a big fan. She has been making incredible music since 2007 with her debut album The Fame. Since then, she has released some of the best songs known to man, all while being the coolest person on the entire planet. Some honorable song mentions, before I get into the meat of this article, are “Speechless” (2009), “Judas” (2011), “You And I” (2011), “Venus” (2013) and “Hold My Hand” (2022). God, it was hard to narrow that down, but if you somehow do not know these songs, please please please give them a listen. You will be healed. Anyways, unless you have been living under a rock, you also know that Gaga has recently released a new album, “MAYHEM” (2025). Quite literally the best thing since sliced bread. This album is incredible, no skips. Not a single one.
However, her absolute bangers are not the only reason why I pray to Gaga every night before I go to bed. She’s also my favorite queer pop icon. She has been supporting the queer community for as long as she has been in the public eye, even back when supporting the queer community was a potentially career-tanking stance to take. My personal favorite example of this is her 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper in 2011. Cooper chooses to address the rumor running rampant at the time that she had a penis. This rumor was obviously a distasteful response to her radical queer allyship and an attempt to alienate and hurt her. However, Gaga did not shut the rumor down. Instead, in the most unbothered voice and mid chew on ice from her drink, she responds, “Maybe I do. Would it be so terrible?” She then goes on to say, “Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care and neither do I.” That’s right Gaga, we don’t care, because you are hot either way.
In 2012, Gaga took her support a step further and founded The Born This Way Foundation which raises money to create a safer, more inclusive world for young people in terms of mental health, wellness and LGBTQ+ visibility. Iconic. This foundation funds research, wellness programs, supplies grants, and works to provide community and support resources for young people in need. Over the course of the foundation’s existence, it has awarded a cumulative five million dollars to both individuals and 260 different organizations. Incredible. More recently, Gaga reupped her queer ally card during her 2025 Grammy acceptance speech–stating that queer and transgender people are and always will be visible. Stunning and absolutely true.
This woman has been a star of the industry for 18 incredible years. At the age of 39, she remains a thoughtful and talented person who uses her platform to spread love, support, and community. In a world of billionaires who wouldn’t offer their bottle of Evian if you were on fire and pop stars who refuse to speak out in the name of self-preservation, I am proud to be a Gaga fan.
