The Hill News is only successful if it represents all students across campus. However, in past publications, we have failed to do this. As your student-led newspaper, we, The Hill News, would like to formally acknowledge and apologize for the cover page of our 9/28 edition and the lack of credit given to artist B.o.B in our coverage of Fall Fest.
B.o.B performed an excellent show, playing upbeat throwbacks like “Magic” and “So Good” while also performing some of his newer content. He’s maybe one of the biggest names to perform on campus. The show was a huge success, as students braved the rainy weather conditions throughout the entire concert. As student journalists, it was naïve of us not to recognize and highlight the importance of B.o.B’s performance.
Though our cover page was composed entirely of a picture of B.o.B, we did not provide adequate captioning of the photo to give proper context. Instead, the cover advertised a featured interview with the group Evolfo. On page 4, in our interview with Evolfo, our only mention of B.o.B’s Fall Fest performance was the mere fact that we were unable to interview him. We clearly failed to provide B.o.B with the recognition that his show deserved. Our lack of diligence in the editing process is worthy of blame, and the fault ultimately lies on us, The Hill News.
Growing up in this politically contentious environment, I have always considered myself a supporter of equality whether it be in the realm of gender, race or any other demographic. I believe everyone has a right to opportunity, representation and fairness. Most importantly, I believe everyone has a right to respect.
However, the criticism of our 9/28 issue has made me realize that even if we consider ourselves proponents of justice and equal rights, we must come to terms with the fact that there are still actions we take and things we say that can easily foster oppression and the maltreatment of others. Our failure to credit the only Fall Fest performer of color was by no means acceptable and, as editors, we are completely responsible.
I would like to sincerely thank Moemedi Rakhudu for bringing this issue to light. Given the state of our country and the socio-cultural issues we face, it is especially important that we do not let this negligence go unnoticed. It is for this reason that I consider our wrongdoing an incredibly valuable and essential learning experience. We will do our best to prevent this kind of negligence from happening in the future.
I believe dialogue is an absolute must in situations like this, which is why I encourage all who find fault with The Hill News to make your voices heard. Your concerns will not only improve our news organization, but the individuals who manage it as well.
