A New Community For SLU Students

0

As a student (class of 2015), most of my experiences and memories are from campus or University related events. I think this is common for many Laurentians, but as a University employee and a resident of the Village of Canton, I have noticed a delightful trend taking root in our student body over the past three years; students are frequenting community events in the village in far greater numbers than in my memory. I’ve heard a few ideas as to why some of us locals think that is, but seeing that this is an opinion piece, I’ll offer mine: pandemic walks.

The walks that so many of us took while we were navigating the Coronavirus pandemic has carried over into what I can only describe, as a delightful new habit. I see students strolling the farmer’s market in the Village park on Tuesday & Fridays; grabbing an early coffee or a late breakfast; browsing at local thrift stores; attending live music; and even selling their art at different pop-up makers markets.

I love the friendly smiles and quick “hello” that often comes with bumping into students as I run my own errands around town. I only got to know Canton after a serendipitous return to SLU as an employee; and I realize that I missed out on getting to know the community that embraces St. Lawrence University. The classes of students that are on campus now are ahead of the curve, and I hope it stays that way.

I look forward to seeing you around town, and if you ever want a recommendation for the best pies in the North Country, just reach out to me.
