Kappa Kappa Gamma Hosts Book Drive for Canton Public Library

0

In very recent events, members of St. Lawrence University’s sorority: Kappa Kappa Gamma, are seeking to raise funds and donations of books to the Canton Public Library.

The Canton Public Library, which was established in 1887, plays a vital role in the Canton community by providing numerous programs, organizations and services for local residents.

With these programs, organizations and services, children up to the age of 18 are able to learn and develop a passion for arts and crafts, cooking and baking, games, technology and book talks of popular and classic literature. All of these aspects are truly helpful for cultivating young learners and students in the town of Canton.

However, resulting from an unforeseen flood a few weeks ago, 400 of the Canton Public Library’s Children books have been lost and are unrecoverable.

This has been incredibly upsetting for the local library and the Canton community as a whole, since those books were all enjoyed by many local children.

Still, in the light of such an unfortunate event, Kappa Kappa Gamma has been working to make a difference for our town library by creating an on campus book drive (with a donation option as well). This fundraiser is aiming to restore books back to the Canton Public Library’s beloved bookshelves, while at the same time, bringing our whole entire SLU community together to help.

After hearing from Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Philanthropy Chair, Kari Hyyppa ’21, I was able to understand how important this cause is for their chapter.

“The National Philanthropy of Kappa Kappa Gamma is Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) which is committed to inspiring a passion for reading among children. As proud supporters of RIF, we are passionate about helping the town of Canton.”

Hyyppa continued, “it would mean the world to the community if we could show our support by donating books. Books are being collected in front of the Student Information Desk in the Student Center.

If you are not able to donate books we will also be graciously accepting Venmo donations of up to $5 to Kari-Hyyppa. I believe this book drive is the perfect opportunity to see the community of St. Lawrence come together to help out in times of need!”

Kappa Kappa Gamma has already started to collect books for the Canton Public Library, but they are still seeking further donations for this meaningful cause.

If anyone reading this is willing to spare a moment of time to give a few dollars, some change or maybe even one of your books, just remember that your local library will be very thankful.

Thank you to all who have contributed. And most of all, thank you Kappa!
