Learning To Ski on Campus
On Wednesday, the Outing Club hosted a learn to ski event on the Richard F. Brush ’52 University Quad. The event is meant to get people on skis for the first time. The O.C. provided all of the gear from skis and ski boots to snowpants and helmets. Since skiing is a large part of campus culture at St. Lawrence University, with Whiteface being nearby and big events like Titus, learn to ski is aimed to help people feel more comfortable participating in this realm of student life.
“I would say that skiing is an incredible sport and a real fixture of life at SLU, so being able to share that experience with others is very rewarding,” said Emerson Brott ’26. Brott lives in the OC and spearheaded the organization of the event. He really enjoyed putting on the learn to ski event for the second year as it allows him to pass on his lifelong passion for the sport.
He also hopes that the learn to ski event can help to make skiing more accessible to students on campus. “We acknowledge that skiing is often cost prohibitive, and that ski culture often excludes certain communities so breaking down some of those barriers is key to our mission,” said Brott.
