Trunk or Treat: Socially Distant Trick or Treating for Local Youth

0

On Saturday, cars lined the rows of J-lot with decorated car trunks to allow local Canton youth to trick-or-treat in a socially distant way. Halloween sparked national concern in terms of COVID safety and proper social distancing. However, St. Lawrence’s trunk or treat was a fun and COVID safe remedy for traditional trick or treating.

Jenny L’Hommedieu, Class of 2023, was a volunteer at the event.

“Everyone had baskets of candy that they passed out to people who pulled up to their trunks,” she said.

Abby Williams, Class of 2023 and a member of Delta Delta Delta, also was a volunteer.

“Cars with SLU students gathered around in the parking lot to make a path for outside cars to go window to window picking up candy,” said Williams. “Once a car drove by the driver would roll down their window and SLU students would greet the children with a mask and gloves.”

Along with these COVID safety precautions, Williams and L’ Hommedieu said that everyone was wearing masks and were maintaining a safe distance from one another. The SLU students passing out the candy were also required to wear gloves for extra precaution.

L’Hommediue is also a member of Delta Delta Delta, and volunteered alongside other members of her sorority.

“I chose to volunteer through my sorority because I thought it would be a great way to interact with people from campus and see some fun costumes, but also try to give the kids of Canton a fun Halloween experience,” said L’Hommedieu.

Williams was excited to volunteer and  to provide happiness and joy to the local youth.

“If I were a kid on Halloween during the pandemic, I would be bummed about not being able to go trick or treating, so this event was the next best thing,” said Williams, “I enjoyed being able to give back to the community and put a smile on so many faces.”

L’Hommedieu said it was a really fun experience and she was glad to see a somewhat “normal” Halloween event.

Williams agreed, “My experience was great,” Williams said, “It was great to see different teams, clubs and organizations come together to give back to the Canton community.”
