Major Declaration Week

0

For sophomores, this week may prove especially stressful as major declaration week falls
February 19th through February 23rd. Students are encouraged to declare their majors before the
March 1st deadline strikes. Members of academic advising will be available to assist students in
the process and various majors are holding info sessions to learn more about their departments.
Throughout the week, members of the Academic Advising team will be tabling in the student
center between 11:30 am-1:00 pm to help students with any questions. If students would like to
further discuss major declaration, they are encouraged to seek a one-on-one session with an
academic advisor.
Numerous majors are also holding events to give students a glimpse into what their field is all
about. Various majors have already held events this month, as Digital Media & Film, Global
Studies, and Anthropology are all set to hold programming this week. Students interested in
these events can find more information in an email sent by academic advising last week. If your
intended major isn’t holding an event, department chairs are also always happy to meet with
students to discuss their field.
Picking a major can be a daunting task, especially for students who don’t exactly know what they
want to pursue. Students should not feel alone if they don’t have a major picked out yet, as most
students enter SLU undeclared. Many students choose St. Lawrence because of the holistic,
well-rounded approach taken to academics. When choosing a major, students should focus on
something they love learning about. Any major at SLU will provide the critical skills needed in
the professional world. Completing a major will occupy the bulk of a student’s course load
throughout their college experience. Therefore, students should find something that excites them
and major in that because that’s where they will spend most of their time and energy.
St. Lawrence proudly boasts a plethora of majors and minors that encompass a diverse student
body. There are over 70 majors that students can choose from, and most students study multiple
disciplines. For students that have more than one field of interest, St. Lawrence offers various
combined majors, as well as a Multi-Field Major where students can design their own academic
track.
When students have decided on a major, they will need to find an academic advisor in their
respective department. After establishing an advisor, students will have to submit the online
major declaration form, which can be found on the St. Lawrence Academic Advising webpage
under Major/Minor declaration forms. This form will require the approval of both your new
advisor and the department chair. Upon submitting the forms, students will have officially
declared themselves in their respective major.
